Supervision details

Clinical Supervision with Dr May Sarsam:

Providing supervision for other psychological professionals is a role I enjoy immensely. I have extensive experience supporting both clinically focussed practitioners and colleagues in more senior or service level roles within the NHS and private sectors. My main aim is to support supervisees to explore, articulate and make sense of their clinical and workplace challenges through a safe, supportive, normalising space from someone who has more than likely seen and felt many of the issues you may be experiencing. I am person-centred in my approach, and therefore keen to support my supervisees to practice and model self-care, both for their own sustainable working and for the benefit of their clients and staff members.

I have designed, built and led highly successful NHS psychological services within adult inpatient, community team and specialist team contexts so have a detailed and mature understanding of the challenges, constraints and pressures for clinicians and leaders. I very much enjoy sharing my skills in service development, clinical pathway architecture and systemic formulation. I draw on my Compassionate Leadership, workplace dynamics and Workplace Coaching skills to help support my supervisees to build and maintain healthy, thriving teams.

From a clinical perspective, I have substantial experience of working with, and providing supervision for clinicians working with, adult clients experiencing any and all mental health or personality difficulties at most levels of severity and risk. As well as the client groups I have listed in the general section above, this includes many years of working successfully towards recovery with clients experiencing psychosis, paranoia, complex trauma and personality difficulties.

Online Working:

My most recent NHS role involved designing and leading a regional service to support health, social care and emergency services staff with their mental health during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. As a result, I began (as a novice) to explore the merits of online therapeutic approaches. What I found was that, not only was this just as effective as face to face therapy / supervision in the majority of cases, but that it had many unexpected benefits, particularly for busy clients or colleagues who sometimes struggled to find the time to prioritise travelling to attend sessions. Part of our initial telephone discussion would be to assess whether this approach would be suitable for you in terms of confidentiality, psychological safety and individual needs.

HCPC
Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC)

The HCPC are an independent, UK-wide health regulator. They set standards of professional training, performance and conduct for 16 professions.

They keep a register of health professionals who meet their standards, and they take action if registered health professionals fall below those standards. They were created by a piece of legislation called the Health Professions Order 2001.

Registration means that a health professional meets national standards for their professional training, performance and conduct.
