What is it about chocolate?
So why is it that when we are sad, we have a tendency to turn to chocolate?
Eating chocolate increases the levels of endorphins released into the brain, giving credence to the claim that chocolate is a comfort food. The endorphins work to lessen pain and decrease stress. Another common neurotransmitter affected by chocolate is serotonin. Serotonin is known as an anti-depressant. One of the chemicals which cause the release of serotonin is tryptophan found in, among other things, chocolate.
As humans, we seem to instinctively gravitate towards things that help us feel good. Counselling may be something that you could turn to that would also help you. It can help you to look at things in a different perspective and give you ideas on how to change your life for the better.
Just knowing that you are trying to improve your life can help to lift your spirits. And if you think you might have over indulged on the chocolate fix, you could always try exercise! That too increases the release of Serotonin, which can help as a great mood lifter.
So go for it, make an appointment with a counsellor and then reach for that chocolate bar!
