Emotional life skills

Emotional life skills can help you cope better with the hurdles and challenges that life inevitably throws at all of us from time to time. By working to develop and enhance these skills or personal attributes, we can be better equipped to deal with difficult times when they arrive. 

So what are these life skills? Here are three of the most important ones:

1. Resilience. This emotional life skill helps us to stay mentally and emotionally strong in the face of setbacks and adversity, to pick ourselves up after a fall. Resilience enables you to stand fast, to weather storms and to not fall apart when life events are testing your reserves of energy or strength. What helps us to grow our resilience? Trying to take a positive attitude to life, to be - in general - optimistic that things will work out alright in the end, to try to see the glass half-full rather than half-empty, and to see failure as a learning experience rather than as a negative judgement upon us.

2. Perseverance. This helps us to 'keep calm and carry on' when things are difficult. Finding it difficult to break a bad habit? Trying to learn a new skill, a new language, a new set of tasks at work? Perseverance is what 'keeps us keeping on' even when things aren't working out as we'd hoped or planned; it's the ability to take the long view - to not lose sight of the end result and to continue working towards it despite hurdles or setbacks. You can help to build perseverance by setting small, achievable goals that give you a sense that you're getting closer to your goal, whatever that might be. And when mistakes happen, try to learn from them rather than take them as a sign that you should give up.

3. Compassion. We tend to think of compassion as something that we feel towards others, but actually feeling compassion for ourselves when we stumble, fail or make mistakes is a powerful way of nurturing our resilience and perseverance, and our determination to get back up again. When we show ourselves compassion, we're doing the very opposite of judging or criticising ourselves and, instead, acknowledging that life can be very difficult at times and that we don't always get it right. 

Counselling can help us to build emotional life skills like these which can be helpful in whatever we choose to do, or have to face, in life.
