About me

You may be considering counselling or psychotherapy because you feel concerned about a particular current or past problem or distressed by certain life events. You may require help to cope with and understand feelings of anger, fear or low self- esteem. You may not know what is wrong but know that something is.

Initial consultation is an opportunity for you to tell me about what you are experiencing so that we can think together about this and the benefits of any suggested treatment/therapy.

I work with people individually and in groups

Training, qualifications & experience

I have thirty four years experience in Psychotherapy, Counselling and related fields. I am a member of the the Royal College of Occupational Therapists and an Integrative Arts Psychotherapist (UKCP accredited). In addition to this I have qualifications in psychoanalytic group psychotherapy and in psychodynamic counselling.

My work has been with adults, for GPs, NHS practitioners and in Private Practice.

What is Psychotherapy and how does it work?

The aim of psychotherapy is for sustainable change over time. Many of my clients have had short bouts of counselling prior to requesting psychotherapy. Their wish is to explore and move on from the underlying problems or life events which may be contributing to symptoms such as depression, panic attacks or reoccurring relationship issues.

In what becomes for the client a supportive and trusting relationship, self defeating patterns of behavior and skewed perceptions can be identified and made sense of.  A client's experience in Psychotherapy can lead to a greater self awareness and healthier, more authentic functioning in relationships, which freed of previous limitations become themselves better places to learn and grow.

I would describe my approach as relational; integrating theory from intersubjective and humanistic models with some psychoanalytic schools of thought.

Group Psychotherapy

The here and now experience of a therapy group provides members with an opportunity for learning more about how they see, interact with, and are seen by others. In the group, over time, members talk about, reflect upon and are helped to make, links between their past and present experiences and in so doing, gain insight into characteristic repeating patterns of behavior and possible difficulties. Contact with others gives stimulus, support and challenge and opportunities arise to change unhelpful perceptions and behavior. The group can also provide a safe place to try out new and unfamiliar ways of relating.

My groups have been running for some time now and despite initial concern regarding commitment and the natural fears which people have on coming into a group, members of these groups would say that the mutual support which is experienced has really helped them to discover more about themselves and to move on in their lives.   I have some spaces currently and am able to offer these at £20 per 90 minute session.
