About me

Counselling: I was once asked: what are the themes that people are bringing to their sessions? I was quite unable to answer. Each person uniquely brings themself and each person is unique in their struggles, fears, desires and needs. People vary greatly in the resources they are able to bring to living their lives, at times barely just surviving. Undertaking counselling and contemplating any kind of change requires an act of courage and so needs to be carried out at the right pace, with support that is sensitive to the individual's capacity at that time.

Why counselling may be sought

Counselling or longer term psychotherapy can be helpful at times of loss, trauma, severe anxiety, unhappiness and depression, as well as being valuable when you are looking to resolve relationship problems. Equally if you are feeling confused or uncertain about your life, talking it through with somebody impartial can be helpful. Problems may appear to be mainly internal, private to you, or external, originating from outside, and you may feel frustrated and overwhelmed by these feelings. Counselling and therapy can help you work through to better position.

How I work

Also, see below, 'making a contract.'

Life can be painful. The way I work is known as 'humanistic'  with a 'psychodynamic' underpinning. Humanistic means I am client led, respecting you as the author of your life, and  psychodynamic work tends to look a bit deeper at unconscious layers.  As well as giving  voice to your thoughts and feelings, you are very likely to  see how your past is influencing and patterning the way you experience  the present. You may want to  explore how your early experiences and beliefs about yourself influence you, and you may want to look more closely at your early relationships, including your early family relationships, as these may be affecting your relationships now. But what is troubling you now is the primary focus of our work. It can be an emotionally  painful process but healing and growth are worth working for.

Our work together is confidential and I do not share what you say with anybody, but I am in regular supervision as is required in my profession. I am an accredited & registered BACP practitioner and follow the BACP code of ethics.

I like to do long term face to face work but am also able to offer a time limited arrangement which is when we make a contact to work together for a pre agreed and limited number of sessions. I am willing to work online with Skype or zoom if you prefer or need to meet that  way.

Biography

Starting with a B.A. in Developmental Psychology from the University of Sussex, I followed this many years later with a Diploma in Counselling from the University of Brighton. I completed a two year Gestalt training and was a member of Brighton  Gestalt group for many years. I studied for a Certificate in Psychodynamic Counselling at Sussex University and a diploma in Psychodynamic Supervision at the Westminster Pastoral Foundation, London.

I am an accredited M.B.A.C.P. Counsellor/psychotherapist and follow the BACP  code of ethics.

I worked in the NHS as a practice counsellor for many years after training, but  have been in private practice for still longer  as it allows me to work long term with clients who need it. You can self refer to me for counselling.

I was  a qualified and practicing Iyengar Yoga teacher for many years. I have since retired from teaching Yoga but still go to classes and enjoy my practice as much as ever. It is calming and reparative and supports me in my therapy work particularly when there is a history of trauma.

How to contact me and making a 'contract'.

My practice is in central Hove.

You can self refer, please email me at jenny@jcm.co.uk   or phone me on 07890 607902. Please  leave me a message and I will phone you back.

My fees are in the low to mid £40s a session. My therapeutic 'hour' is 55 minutes.

After our initial 'one hour' meeting or soon after, we will make a verbal contract for our work, and arrange a regular time to meet. Sessions are usually once a week, and at a set time whenever possible.

My counselling room is on the ground floor.  It is a spacious, quiet  and comfortable space. There is a bus service passing the door, a train station nearby and on street parking.

Registered / Accredited

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
