About me

Whether it's a loss, an addiction, anger and frustration or depression, talking to a counsellor or psychotherapist in a non-judgmental atmosphere is a valuable way to begin to gain some perspective and think about your life.

About Me

I practice in South London (easy reach of Brixton tube).

I am registered with the United Kingdom Council of Psychotherapy and a member of the Site for Contemporary Psychoanalysis and the International Association for Relational Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy. I work with individuals and couples (straight and gay) privately and I have considerable experience of practicing psychotherapy and group work in the Voluntary sector.

Before training as a psychotherapist I worked in theatre both here and in Europe and have also had considerable experience in education working in mainstream and special needs schools. I have always been interested in the way in which we find different forms of reflecting on our lives and I have found contemporary psychoanalysis a rich area of ideas and practice which can help us through difficult times.

Counselling and Psychotherapy; initial meeting.

You can contact me by telephone or email and after a brief discussion we can make an initial appointment. In this first session you may say as much as you are able to about what brings you to counselling. I will offer some responses and will give you an idea about what is entailed in counselling and psychotherapy. If we decide to work together we'll then arrange further sessions. It isn't always easy to walk through the door and make a start and I recognise the anxieties that may be stirred up for you in making this move.

Ongoing therapy.

You may initially come with a presenting issue such as a loss, an addiction a sexual/emotional problem or during a difficult time in a relationship. There may be a defined trauma stemming from childhood or from a recent life event, or it might be a particular fear or something that is keeping you awake at night. After a while the therapy may develop into a more extensive exploration as the initial issue is heard in the context of your life story as a whole. It can both be a challenge and of great interest as you get more in touch with your desire, whether in relation to work or your sexual and emotional life. We work patiently with the anxiety or confusion that may come up and with the repetitive patterns of mood and behaviour which get in your way. After a time, long held patterns of suffering such as depression and anxiety may begin to lift and enable greater enjoyment and creativity.

Couples Counselling

Couples come to therapy to work through crises in the relationship which may include sexual and emotional difficulties. I usually book the couple in for six sessions initially after which there is a review before deciding to continue with the work. Couples counselling provides a space where there can be a beginning to communication with each other about areas of life together which have become painful and difficult to talk about.

Coaching

I offer a coaching service for individuals who have a particular career, educational or business challenge they need help with. I specialise in areas where there may be anxiety with presentations at work and for training courses, conflicts and impasses in staff and management teams. This is a very interactive approach and will normally be for 1 and 1/2 hours.

Training, qualifications & experience

I trained at The Site for Contemporary Psychoanalysis which qualified me to be registered as a psychoanalytic psychotherapist with the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy. This was an intensive training which involved my own analysis and supervision over many years.

I have been seeing people in therapy for 17 years and as well as running a busy private practice I supervise qualified psychotherapists and counsellors and psychotherapists in training. For six years I supervised a team of art and drama psychotherapists at The Studio Upstairs which provides a space for people who have been through the mental health system to develop as artists and performers. I have a background in theatre, music and education and I am interested in the ways in which, counselling, psychotherapy and meditation can complement each other.

I was Chair of the Site for Contemporary Psychoanalysis for 5 years and I have contributed papers to our public events at The Site and at The Freud Museum including a Winnicott conference and a conference on Class and Psychoanalysis and a conference on Wagner. l also teach on the Site's psychoanalytic training. I have also contributed to study events bringing together psychoanalysis, theatre and opera at the Arcola Theatre and the English National Opera.
