About me

Thank you for visiting my profile. I am a UKCP-accredited Integrative Psychotherapist with almost twenty years of experience working with people from many different backgrounds aged 17 to 80+.

In times of difficulty, particularly when you have no one else to turn to, therapy provides a space with understanding in which to come to terms with life in all its contradictions and complexity. Needing counselling is therefore about recognising necessities and limitations, as much as affirming choice and personal responsibility.

The best possible advice is to be brave and to recognise that, while talking to someone can talk a lot of courage, it can also be enormously helpful and positive.

How my sessions work

Through developing the therapeutic relationship in an empathetic and safe space, it is possible for clients to link those past and present experiences that have led to entrenched patterns of behaviour. It then becomes possible for them to challenge deep-seated (or sedimented) beliefs and to learn to create an increasingly comfortable space inside and around themselves, despite external constraints.

As the therapeutic relationship develops, my role is to offer an open attitude and a non-directive (though not directionless) stance to help you move toward a process of more authentic living, in which you can find your own authority, discover something valuable to live for in the present, and come to terms with who you now are.

You will probably find it helpful to have an initial consultation with more than one therapist so that you can find the one with whom you think you will be able to work best.

About my practice

  • Usually, I see clients once a week on a regular basis, although sometimes I may see them twice weekly.
  • I offer daytime and early evening appointments between 9.00 a.m. and 5.00 p.m. Monday to Thursday.
  • Each session lasts for 50 minutes.
  • I see clients in my office located in a garden setting within easy reach by bus or car of Banbury Road in North Oxford. Parking is available close-by on the road.

Training, qualifications & experience

My academic background is in Psychology (in which I have a BA) and Psychotherapy and Counselling (in which I have a MA from the School of Psychotherapy and Counselling, Regent's College, London (1996)). I have also received training in EMDR. I am accredited with the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) and am also a Senior Member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (MBACP).

Before concentrating on my private practice, I spent several years working as a counsellor with Oxford University's Counselling Service and I continue to work with students from a wide diversity of backgrounds and nationalities, as well as with adults of all ages.

In this and in my private practice I have extensive experience of offering both short-term and long-term individual therapy. I also bring to my work the experience of having worked in a variety of health care settings in Italy and South Africa.

I have experience in both brief and long term work with adults, including people who require therapy as part of their own professional training.

I also work with students aged 17+ and worked for a number of years as a student counsellor at Oxford University's Counselling Service.

Member organisations

Registered / Accredited

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

UKCP
UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP)

The UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) is a leading professional body for the education, training and regulation of psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors. Its register is accredited by the government's Professional Standards Authority.

As part of its commitment to protect the public, it works to improve access to psychotherapy, to support and disseminate research, to improve standards and to respond effectively to complaints against its members.

UKCP standards cover the range of different psychotherapies. Registration is obtained by training or accrediting with one of its member organisations, or by holding a European Certificate in Psychotherapy. Accredited by the Professional Standards Authority.

Other areas of counselling I deal with

Cultural issues.

My main focus is change in personal circumstances. Such changes can be biological (for example, adolescence, entering middle age, becoming older) or may involve other life changes, such as becoming a parent or facing retirement. Others may involve life crises, like bereavement, confidence at work, loss of a job, divorce or serious illness, or may arise from difficulties in relationships, whether personal, social, or work-related.

Being Italian, but living in Britain, means that I can offer therapy in Italian as well as English, and also makes me particularly attuned to other people's experience of cultural differences.
