About me

I have many years experience as an NHS psychotherapist (Psychodynamic) treating moderate to severe psychological issues in both adult and children’s services. I have also lectured in psychotherapy, integrative counselling and forensic mental health within universities and colleges.
I have held clinical lead and management posts within multidisciplinary psychological services.

I am passionate about improving mental health and have been lucky enough to have had the opportunity to contribute a (very) little to political debate within the House of Commons.

My NHS work included individual therapy both within the psychiatric hospital and outpatient services. I was also part of a committee for implementation of the NICE guidelines on mental health and trained psychiatrists in the treatment of severe personality disorders.

Additionally, together with a consultant psychiatrist I ran the country’s first ever group for adult sufferers of M.E. and was part of a unique NHS service devoted to student mental health.

I have also facilitated CBT based anger management groups for forensic patients and cognitive analytic therapy (CAT) groups for high risk patients with severe personality disorders. I have also provided clinical supervision for nurse-therapists.

Outside of the NHS I have worked as a consultant to Mind and the National Schizophrenia Fellowship advising and setting up new services and worked for social services as a therapist for adults with severe learning difficulties.

I am experienced in working with adults, children, adolescents and young people, dealing with a wide range of issues.

I have trained and practiced in a range of therapeutic models however, research shows that the most important factor in successful therapy is the relationship between the therapist and the client and this is central to my practice.

Training, qualifications & experience

I have over 15 years of solid experience across a range of services. This has included working for the NHS as a Specialist Psychotherapist and Lecturing at the University of Southampton in Intergrative Therapy.

I have a Psychodynamic diploma, Humanistic Certificate and Transactional analysis 101. I am experienced in facilitating both group and individual therapy in a range of models.

I am registered with the British Assosciation for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and adhere to their ethical framework.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
