Client Comments

“I am so very appreciative of Jill's wonderful capacity to listen and understand and heal.  I could say so much more but all I really need to say is thank you so much on my behalf and my beautiful children.  This is a truly life saving service and done with the utmost care and concern at all times.”

“ Just a quick note to say thank you for taking the time to listen and help me over these last weeks.  I know it is your job to do so but speaking with you has made me realize I’m not alone in the world”

“Thank you for supporting me in transforming ‘Who I am’ in my life.  The experience has been amazing”

Mentor & Supervisee Comments

“I want to say how I value our supervisory relationship, which for me is much more than an ethical necessity. The non- judgmental and unconditional positive regard, which I seek to provide in my relationships with clients and with my co- workers as coordinator of Dove House, is what I experience and value in my supervision with you. You both support and challenge me and within that I feel held. I appreciate working creatively at times and your skills in this area and your encouragement to try alternative ways of thinking and bouncing new ideas are useful. I appreciate your teaching and sharing of knowledge. I respect your boundaries and feel respected within them. I feel I can be open and honest with you whatever my feelings, knowing that you also have your own self- care in place. “

“There are many benefits to this supervision, I have never received supervision like it before, if I have had it, it has been poor and more about getting the job done and not about me as a person.
I like that it is a 'space' away from my normal work environment. I feel supported, listened to, acknowledged, not judged, you have enabled me to gain greater insights into myself, which resulted in me being able to make meaningful positive changes in my life.
As a result I am a happier, self-motivated, more effective and balanced (well more of the time!) employee, colleague and facilitator'
And I reading the above makes me feel very blessed, thank you Jill.”

“Jill has enabled me to see my capabilities and given me new confidence when

Working with complex clients.  It is her willingness to support and observe impartially

My work through supervision that offers me something I will be forever mindful of

And that is that my supervisor has given me faith in myself and courage to believe

that I am a good practitioner “

Further information

2009-2011 I provided group supervision and training workshops for staff at KRASACC (specialising in offering support for victims of rape and domestic violence).

In December 2009 to June 2010 I agreed to support Oakdale Services (now known as Insight Health Care) as Case Manager supporting the appropriate allocation of cases to practitioners throughout the country in support of the Employee Assisted Programmes and Authority Support Programmes contracts. Having to manage case loads support practitioners in supervision of their cases and manage a 24 helpline, which provides counselling support and advice for users countrywide.

I have developed a range of training courses and experiential workshops, and worked with Universities, Colleges, and voluntary organisations including Northrop Hall Child & Family Trust, Mind, Well Women Centre, KRASACC, NACRO (the crime reduction team) Wakefield Targeted Youth Support, Kirklees council - Anti Social Behavior Team (ASB) and Domestic Violence Team.

I work with a wide range of issues, including some of the most difficult and challenging aspects of relationships. These include racism, transition/life change, crisis intervention, anxiety/panic attacks, stress, anger management, relationship difficulties, abandonment, loss/grief, depression, abuse, eating disorders, obsessional behavior, and bullying and conflict resolution. I have also worked with groups and individuals building confidence, enabling effective Communication personal and professional development, exploring issues around self-esteem, self worth and traumatic experiences past and present (mental, physical and sexual).

Counselling or Psychotherapy?

There is a vast overlap of styles, theories and techniques between those therapists who describe themselves as providing counselling and those providing psychotherapy.

The BACP gives the following definition:

'Counselling and psychotherapy are umbrella terms that cover a range of talking therapies. They are delivered by trained practitioners who work with people over a short or long term to help them bring about effective change or enhance their wellbeing.’

A definition that I find useful, in guiding how I’m working with a client and agreeing (contracting) between us on the direction of the therapy, is given by the European Association of Transactional Analysis (EATA):

“Counselling

Counsellors who utilize transactional analysis work directly on “here and now” problem solving with their clients, focusing on creating productive problem solving behaviours.

Psychotherapy

…work “with” clients to eliminate dysfunctional behaviours and establish and reinforce healthy functioning.”

The way in which I work is directly related the issues the client brings to therapy, as well as the outcome we contract for.

So if someone comes to therapy due to a specific event that has, or is causing them difficulties, and they wish to explore how they can resolve this I am likely to consider that the client wants counselling.

If a client comes to therapy with a generalised dissatisfaction with how they experience themselves, others or the world in which they live, I would explore through the contracting process the usefulness of psychotherapy for the client. I would see this particularly indicated if someone wonders why the same unpleasant events repeatedly occur in their lives.

Sometimes clients may come to therapy initially for counselling following an event, and then discover that their own beliefs, behaviours or feelings have contributed to the difficult event occurring in the first place. At this point the client may wish to re-contract for a psychotherapy contract, which not only explores current options but also explores the ways in which they can bring about lasting positive change in themselves.

Member organisations

Registered / Accredited

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

Connecting space Journals visit www.connecting-space.co.uk

It is our hope that this Space will become safe enough for you to connect with others, whether through actively contributing or by being an interested listener and supporter.

* Space to connect on a therapeutic and personal level

See our thought for the month and place a comment

Kate found, in the sharing of her journey, strength to face her fears. Writing the letters on particular themes enabled her to express her personal inner struggles. The witnessing of those struggles by others was therapeutic for her. She often spoke from her professional role as a psychotherapist.

* Offering a supportive network,

At the end of each letter there is the opportunity for you to reply to the person: to express what has stirred you, to ask questions of the writer or to offer hope to them from your own experience.

* Finding your voice and being heard

Whether you are a listener to the Journeys of others, a quiet supporter, or someone who likes to contribute or someone looking for answers, we hope you will be able to hear your inner voice more clearly. When you do hear that voice, your inner response, you may want others to hear, too.

* Sharing your personal journey. The effects, the consequences, the choices.

If you are stimulated to share your own personal journey, please write some of your ideas in an email and send to Jill. You will be offered help in the initial stages of preparing to start this new thread of discussion.

* Affirming your sense of self as an individual through this connection

By following the journey of another person your own sense of self may be awoken to new areas of thought and experience. We want this to be an affirming experience for you: the defining of who you are as different, but just as valuable as the next person.

* Use of pseudonym

It may help you to be more relaxed in contributing if you use a pseudonym: another name of your choice. This is good protective practice to help your inner voice to find space to grow in secret - like the planting of a seed.

* Other Areas:

Please use the other areas of discussion. You may want to tell others about a poem you have written or heard, or share some music, good books, or artwork. Kate contributed drawings she did whilst awaiting chemo.

* Subscribing:

Subscribing enables you to read journal letters and make relevant comments (ie.Post).You can use a pseudonym if you wish .
