About me

Anxieties and personal difficulties can be isolating and debilitating and it can be difficult to find someone to trust, who feels safe enough to help you in untangling difficult feelings, and who is not directly involved in your situation. Someone that can help you think about unhelpful relationship patterns, or support recovery from trauma or loss and help you feel your way through any number of complex and difficult situations so you do not feel so alone in it all.

I am an experienced Psychotherapist and practice individual and couples Psychotherapy and Supervision in Hastings. I offer a safe, non judgemental and confidential therapeutic relationship in which you can explore personal or difficult issues that may be causing you distress, anxiety or depression.

If you are in emotional pain or in a difficult situation, or have suffered a loss, bereavement, or a traumatic experience or betrayal, or just feel you need space to reflect and re-evaluate and explore who you are, therapy can provide a space to reflect and support to understand your own map of where you are and what might be going on around you.   A space to step aside from the demands of others, or the stress of life, where you can feel, think and consider deeper relational patterns and how you might begin to do things differently.

Many difficult experiences can feel too difficult to do alone, and it can difficult for even well meaning family and friends to fully understand the dynamics of the situation you may be in. whether that is around trauma, abusive relationships or transitions of change. Research supports the view that the way people manage to get through a major difficulty or trauma can often be dependent on the support that they have. A confidential and insightful therapeutic relationship where you feel safe to talk and explore your feelings and your situation, can make a difference to you in both finding the map of where you, are and in finding your way through and can sometimes make a difference in your situation.

I work from a Psychoanalytic perspective as this can be helpful in thinking about problems and distress in the present that can sometimes be related to earlier experiences or relationships in our lives. The threads of this can often be found in everyday life, and understanding this can help you gain fresh insight into present relationships and personal difficulties. Psychoanalytic or Psychodynamic Psychotherapists practice a 'talking therapy' and gently encourage you to explore issues more deeply without feeling criticised or judged. Therapy is an opportunity to think about how you think about and respond to lifes events, and an opportunity to explore options and different ways of coping. I am also trained in CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy), and can work with this if I feel this may be helpful for you.

Research also supports the view that the level of trust and empathy between the client and Therapist is more important than the type of therapy. It is therefore important to find a therapist that you feel comfortable with. On this basis I offer an introductory consultation, to enable us to meet and talk about what would be most suitable for you. I usually work with clients on an open ended basis as in my experience this is more beneficial as a deeper understanding can be gained. Alternatively, I can sometimes offer time limited counselling focusing on a particular issue. When it is agreed what would be most helpful to you, we would decide on a regular day and time each week to meet, as the therapy does need a commitment to weekly sessions for continuity.   I can provide psychotherapy once weekly, twice weekly or three times weekly as needed.

My practice is in a tranquil and confidential environment with off road parking, and local bus routes nearby.  A route finder is available on my website: www.hastingstherapy.co.u
