About me

Very experienced Relate trained relationship counsellor, sex therapist, supervisor and trainer offers individual and couple counselling. Specialist areas include communication difficulties, affairs, abuse, and the impact low self-esteem can have on many types of relationships. There might not be a specific issue, and is not unusual for me to hear I still love my partner, but I am no longer 'in love' with him/her.
I feel very privileged to have worked with many stages of the couple relationship, from marriage preparation workshops, co-habiting couples, marriages of up to 40 years duration, and running courses for those who have been recently separated or divorced. I understand that the thought of first approaching a counsellor can be quite daunting, but I hope that I can allay any anxieties you may have when you email or phone me. My aim is to form a strong therapeutic alliance where you feel it is safe to discuss your issues in an atmosphere of warmth, respect and empathy.

Apart from my own clients, I also supervise a team of counsellors who discuss their cases with me and we look for reasons for the clients’ difficulties and possible ways forward for them.

I have many theories to choose from, psychodynamic, systemic, cognitive behavioural theory (CBT), transactional analysis, using active techniques etc; but rather than prescribe one to fit all, I like to adapt the work according to client needs and their own preferred learning styles. I see clients in a dedicated consulting room in a quiet cul-de-sac with parking outside. Situated close to the A10/A120 junction, I am easily accessible to Ware, Harlow, Stevenage, Bishops Stortford and Buntingford.

Member organisations

Registered / Accredited

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

COSRT
College of Sexual and Relationship Therapists (COSRT)

COSRT is the UK’s leading membership organisation for therapists specialising in sexual and relationship issues.

All members must abide by their Code of Ethics and the performance of accredited members is regularly monitored.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Further information

As a trainer, I have worked with the general public in such areas as counselling skills for non-counsellors, marriage preparation workshops, assertiveness training, and interpersonal skills for prisoners who have the opportunity to attend the education and learning wing during the last year of their sentence. I also work for a cancer charity, exploring with their health professionals, how to talk to cancer patients about sexual issues.

On behalf of the Relate Institute, I spent many years training Relate counsellors in assessing if we can work safely with clients where there are issues of domestic violence/abuse. Other courses include working with clients where there are issues of: alcohol, affairs, mental health difficulties, ill-health and physical difficulties, past sexual abuse, bereavement and conducting initial consultation interviews and how to assess if/when to refer to more appropriate agencies.
