About me

I am an experienced UKCP registered psychotherapist, and my private practice is based in Acton/ Ealing, West London.

I offer both short and longer-term counselling and psychotherapy to individuals and couples, which means that we can agree to work together for a limited number of sessions, or leave our arrangements more open-ended, so that you decide when you want to finish.

I work from an existential perspective, which means that sessions are focused on exploring, making sense of, and understanding your way of living in the world with others. Typically, we all encounter certain points in our lives where we feel tensions, or a disorientation, or deep disruption in our circumstances, as if the ground on which we stand and understand ourselves feels shaky and unreliable. It might have to do with our intimate or social relationships with others, or a sense that we don't feel 'in sync' with the world around us. Or it might be that we are gripped by moods that leave us distanced from others, in different ways. Or we might feel that we have never quite understood how we find ourselves living in the predicaments that we do.

These can all be expressed in other, familiar terms, such as stress, distress, unease, frustration, anxiety, depression, deflation, or a lack of self-esteem.

Overall, issues that we are living through can be, or feel, temporary, or they can extend over quite a long period of time. Together, we can look at the issues and difficulties that you experience so that you come away with a deeper awareness and understanding as a result, leading to other possible ways of approaching the same issues or situations that originally brought you to therapy.

My way or style of working is supportive, collaborative, accepting and sensitive. In existential terms, I am both 'with' you, and 'for' you, being wholly committed and focused on what is important to you and what it is that you want to gain from our working together. In other words, the focus is on understanding, which promotes a personal transformation of oneself and how one lives.

I work according to the UKCP codes of ethics and commit to maintaining professional confidentiality in all my work with you. If you wish to have an initial discussion with me, via telephone, to see how you feel about the possibility of working together, I am happy to agree a time when we can talk.

Training, qualifications & experience

I trained as a psychotherapist and counsellor at Regent's University London (formerly Regent's College), School of Psychotherapy and Psychology, to postgraduate and doctoral levels.

In addition to my private practice, which I have held since 2002, I am currently a visiting staff member of Regent's University London School of Psychotherapy and Psychology, where I provide individual and group supervision for trainee psychotherapists and counsellors. I previously held a Visiting Professor position at Union University, Novi Sad, Serbia, where I taught and also acted as external evaluator and moderator.

In terms of previous experience, I have held counselling positions within a London-based NHS hospital, and am a registered NHS provider of therapeutic services. I have also worked within a number of charities and non-profit organisations, including MIND, HMP Brixton Prison, Bereavement Counselling Services and EACS.

I bring to my work many years of previous professional experience in the corporate world, which allows me to understand, provide support and work with the stresses, pressures and conflictual demands that are made on us in such settings.

Other areas of counselling I deal with

I have extensive experience in working with life transitions and the identity challenges that we face in response to those changes, particularly with regard to loss in meaning, anxiety, stress, depression, anger, relationship difficulties and self-esteem and self-worth issues. For example, difficult family relationships, partnership tensions and break-ups, personal struggles to find a more 'grounded' existence in your life, and conflicts and anxieties that you encounter, are all typical examples of the kinds of issues that I have worked with in the past.

When we start to work together, our initial session will provide you with the opportunity to establish how we will proceed. During that first session, we can discuss the issues that bring you to therapy, how we can explore issues together, as well as my policy on confidentiality, fees, cancellations and appointment times.

I am open to agreeing an initially agreed fixed number of sessions, then reviewing our work so far, and then you deciding on the next steps i.e. whether we continue, or you stop. At all times, you have no obligation to continue with therapy; I respect your decision to choose at any time what feels right for you.
