About me

Perhaps you feel nervous about talking to a therapist? The first step, making contact, is often difficult but I think it is fair to say that as you have reached this far in your search, this may be a very good time to take the next step....

Recent times have been challenging for most of us, and the corona virus may well have escalated feelings of anxiety, but this is only one possible emotional reaction to events in your past and present.  Emotional well-being often links with certainty and feeling in control and right now you may feel neither. I would like to offer you the chance to talk about your situation and concerns.  It is likely that your feelings are linked to events earlier in your life and we can explore all of this together.  We can work on a screen or in person in Whetstone, N20.

I am a psychodynamic counsellor with 25 year's experience in private practice and GP surgeries, working with adults on a one to one basis. Psychodynamic counselling deals with deep rooted issues which usually have their basis in childhood experiences and relationships. These can go on to have a profound effect during later life, often giving rise to difficulties and problems, which need some help to work through and resolve. This kind of therapy is usually open ended which means that the time frame (and therefore the number of sessions) is not fixed.

Alternatively, I can also work on a time limited basis where a specific number of sessions, or time the therapy lasts, is agreed from the beginning. Coaching can also be incorporated into the work where helpful.

You may already have a good idea of the underlying causes to why you are feeling the way you are, but equally you may be puzzled by your feelings. In either case, whether you are experiencing emotional upset in any form, be it low mood, depression, anxiety, panic, outbursts of anger or tears, upset sleep, frightening dreams, excessive fatigue or general malais, then we may well be able to work together towards greater insight and consequently greater peace of mind.

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
