About me

Introduction

I trained at the University of Cambridge and then worked for the mental health charity MIND for seven years, counselling clients who were experiencing a wide variety of problems including depression, bereavement, addiction, relationship issues and work related stress. I have also worked as counsellor for ADAS a service for clients who experience problems relating to drug, alcohol and other addictions. In 2013 I relocated to York and worked in private practice and for the NHS as a counsellor based in the local GP practices and then later for the IAPT (Improving Access to Psychological Therapies) Service. In 2018 I moved back to the Newmarket area and I am now working from the Lifestuff Counselling Centre in Newmarket.

What is Counselling?

Counselling provides a safe and supportive environment in which to talk through your thoughts and problems and reflect on past and present events with a knowledgeable, non-judgemental professional. It gives you a confidential place to 'let off steam' and express your feelings. It encourages you to take an honest look at your current thoughts, feelings and behaviours that may be preventing you from moving forward. It helps you to find ways of changing these overwhelming emotions in a way that will take you to a safer and more secure place. It can often provide an environment to understand and learn about ourselves so that you can take control of and responsibility for your life.

How I work

As a counsellor I will listen and try to help you explore and make sense of your current feelings and behaviour, we may identify patterns that have their roots in your past experiences. As counselling progresses you may gain insights and work with me to find more helpful ways of coping with your problems and feelings.

Coming to counselling can often be seen as a journey and sometimes the first step is the hardest step. However every journey starts with one step, and maybe you have taken that first step today by looking at this website.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Wheelchair user access

Wheelchair-accessible premises should have step-free access for wheelchair users and individuals who are unable to climb stairs. If a Counsellor's premises aren't step-free, they may offer alternative services such as telephone/web-based appointments, home visits, or meeting clients in different location, so you can choose the option that suits you best.

You can contact the Counsellor to discuss the options available.

Under the Equality Act 2010 service providers have a duty to make reasonable adjustments to ensure that individuals with disabilities can access their service. You can read more about reasonable adjustments to help you to access services on the CAB website.
