About me

I have over 25 years experience as a psychotherapist/counsellor, and 15 years as a clinical supervisor. I was employed by the NHS for nearly 20 years as both a therapist and clinical supervisor, and in both primary and secondary care settings.

I have worked with people from many different backgrounds who have experienced all sorts of psychological distress (of varying severity) including: relationship issues, depression, anxiety (inc.panic attacks), childhood or other forms of abuse and trauma, low self esteem, difficulties in managing emotions etc.

I aspire to be warm, empathic, genuine, non-judgemental, understanding, and thoughtful. I encourage and facilitate individuals: to make sense of their situation, develop self awareness and self-esteem, and motivate change. I use a number of different psychotherapeutic styles and methods, hopefully tailoring my practice to suit the individual's pyschological needs and personality.

Many years ago, I suffered with a history of psychological difficulties, and I sought therapy which I found incredibly beneficial. I realised how good it was to talk things through with someone who really seemed to understand, who helped me explain why I felt the way I did, and to seek solutions for a happier life. As a result, of this period of self development, I became more and more fascinated in psychology and therapy, and eventually decided to retrain as a therapist. A vocation which I love.

In order to maintain good practice and psychological health, I have regular monthly clinical supervision, I practice mindfulness, exercise regularly and undertake therapy if needed.

I see people for either a limited number of sessions or on a more flexible contract. The sessions are one hour long and I have an initial session at reduced rates.
I adhere to the BACP codes of Best Practice, and I regularly update my training.

Training, qualifications & experience

I have been practising for over 25 years; the last 19 years as a NHS psychotherapeutic counsellor and supervisor. Prior to this I was employed by an addictions agency and the Sussex Criminal Justice System. I have regularly updated my qualifications since training with the addictions agency and completing a Post Graduate Diploma at the University of Brighton. I am BACP accredited counsellor/psychotherapist, UKRCP registered counsellor/psychotherapist, and a registered Interpersonal Therapist (IPT first reg. in 2012). I have also completed Clinical Supervision training at the Metanioa Institute (2006). I have a number of shorter but significant trainings in such things as Mindfulness CBT and Compassionate Focussed Therapy.

Prior to training as a counsellor/therapist, I was a University lecturer, illustrator and designer. I have both a Master of Arts and BA (Hons) degrees.

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
