This CBT skills course is a practical introduction for counsellors, psychotherapists, psychologists and mental health professionals who are working clinically. It is based on the DoH competencies for providing CBT for depression and anxiety/anxiety disorders. This entry level course can lead to IAPT professional training.

CBT works with clients’ present day distress and focuses on how what the client thinks effects the way they feel. Clients are taught to notice their internal dialogue and to learn that unhelpful thoughts can be challenged and changed with beneficial effect.

This course is for mental health professionals who are working clinically. You may be a social worker, doctor, nurse or qualified counsellor, psychotherapist or psychologist trained in another modality, for example. There is an expectation that all participants are already proficient in establishing therapeutic relationships. As an entry requirement you will be able to demonstrate proficiency in relationship skills from prior training and clinical experience. Qualified counsellors and psychotherapists successfully completing this course may be eligible for a clinical placement in the WPF therapy CBT service.

Participants will be introduced to the key elements, foundation skills and techniques of CBT assessment, formulation and treatment plans. With an understanding of, and practice in, the principles and implementation of suitable CBT interventions for clients presenting with depression and anxiety/anxiety disorders.
