Working with anxious ambivalent clients
Working with anxious ambivalent, preoccupied and resistant clients. People with this attachment strategy often feel in a bind: they long for help and support but also doubt that it will be available or reliable. This recurring fear of losing what they have can push people to cling on tighter. This holding on can be exhausting for them and intrusive for the other and often brings on the rejection which they so fear.
About the event
We will explore:
- how they developed this pattern
- how it may have shaped clients’ development and adult life
- how practitioners can work most effectively with this group
In addition, we will consider some of the sub-groups and the range of strategies that people with this pattern may develop.
I will use a PowerPoint presentation to share my understanding of anxious ambivalent attachment. We’ll work on specific focused small group exercises and hopefully have lots of lively discussions. The workshop would be useful for practitioners who are interested in attachment theory and want to take a more focused look at the anxious preoccupied experience. The day aims to equip us with skills for attuning to these clients, bearing in mind that our own attachment strategies will come into play in the therapy relationship. We may find these clients more or less triggering depending on our own early attachment experience.
