Why we eat what we eat, The School of Life
In this class, The School of Life resident psychotherapist Charlotte Fox Weber will explore the relationship between food and our emotional health.
Our relationship to food is lifelong and, for many of us, one of the most complicated we experience.
We have more choice in how and what we eat than our ancestors ever dreamed. But from global corporations encouraging us to indulge in their latest confection to tabloid newspapers body-shaming stick-thin celebrities, we’re bombarded from all sides by confusing and pernicious messages attempting to take control of how we think about food. And that’s not all: our attitudes to food are formed not just by the media and culture we live in, but by upbringing and earliest experiences.
This class isn’t about dieting or losing weight. You won’t come away with half a dozen recipe cards. Instead, we’re going to delve deep into the psychology of food, identifying the relationship between how we eat and how we feel, so we can develop healthier eating habits into our lives. If you find yourself eating poorly when you’re bored, tired, or frustrated; if you skip meals when you’re anxious or rushed; if you eat when you’re full or feel guilty about what you eat, then this class is for you.
We’ll explore the causes of Kummerspeck (the German word for emotional overeating) and what we can do about it. We’ll also think about how to manage orthorexia (the obsessive pursuit of healthy diets). Most important of all, through experiential exercises and group activity, you’ll explore your own approach to eating, particularly around emotional issues, looking at the influences of culture, family, upbringing and self-image. You’ll leave with an understanding of how eating well can be a vital part of living well, and how to make sure it happens.
