Silent killer: Covert and overt relationship distress
The online Suicide Prevention Summit is presented annually by the Mental Health Academy. I will join a host of fellow mental health professionals at this important event.
Silent killer: Covert and overt relationship distress
After more than 31 years of clinical experience, I have found that people die by suicide because of relationship difficulties more than as a result of any other issues. This presentation reveals the warning signs and how we may assess suicidal intent. How the characteristics of relationship breakup affect suicide risk is also explored.
By the end of the presentation, attendees will be able to:
- Recognise the warning signs when someone with relationship difficulties is at risk of suicide, and when someone at risk of suicide has relationship difficulties.
- Understand why people experiencing relationship difficulties may find it impossible to talk.
- Understand how breakups are different yet confusingly similar to grief and how this affects suicide risk.
The session will conclude with a short Q&A with Dr. Acton.
