Would you like to be better equipped to spot sex, love or porn addiction?

Want to feel more confident if someone presents in this way?

As psychotherapists/counsellors working with individuals who struggle with underlying emotional or psychological issues such as profound childhood or adult trauma, anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem, we inevitably work with coping strategies that involve addiction of some sort.

These can be substance addictions – alcohol, illegal drugs, prescription drugs, nicotine, etc. Or they can be behaviour addictions – repetitive behaviour patterns involving pleasurable and ultimately compulsive activities such as gambling, exercise, food, shopping/spending. Even self-harm can, with some clients, be viewed as a behaviour addiction.

But, whilst we usually feel comfortable with all these coping strategies, when it involves sex, we can feel out of our depth. Yet the causes of sex addiction are fundamentally the same as for any addiction – a difficult mixture of genetics and environment – usually involving trauma.

Clients will not always initially present with a sex addiction – or concerns that they be addicted -  and when they do, our own discomfort/fears/judgements can cause us to want to refer on. Whilst sometimes this is the right thing to do, it can also lead to further stigmatising and shaming of the client.

This workshop aims to give you a thorough grounding into what sex addiction is, and to help demystify and destigmatise the subject. By the end of this workshop, you will be better equipped both to spot potential sex addiction and also feel more confident in knowing how to work with it appropriately.

In this workshop, we will explore:

  • What is sexual addiction? (bearing in mind there is no DSMV diagnosis).
  • The basics – triggers, escalation and denial.
  • The causes of sexual addiction.
  • Cybersex and porn addiction.
  • Love/relationship addiction.
  • Sex addiction in women.
  • Therapeutic ways of helping.
