BACP private practice network meeting

Self care, compassion fatigue and burn out

Saturday 6th January 2018

On meeting a new client for the first  time I ask about their support network and ways in which they cope with life and what makes their current distress better. In other words I am trying to establish what they do to look after themselves - their self-care.

Part of being a counsellor is modelling an existence where we attend to our self-care and I am pretty sure that clients can tell when we are not very good at seeking support and looking after ourselves. Are you “talking the talk and walking the walk?”

At our January network meeting we will be using a variety of delivery styles to explore together self-care. We will be treated to relaxing live harp music whilst taking part in group breathing exercises and then individually create some art work to capture our relaxed states. After a short break we will discuss the concepts of compassion fatigue, burn out and secondary traumatic stress.

All qualified and trainee counsellors, wherever you live, are welcome and invited to arrive at 9.45am. The meeting will draw to a close at 12 noon.

Please be aware that we have changed venue and from now on will be meeting at: Lutterell Hall, Church Drive, West Bridgford, NG2 6AY.
