Neuroscience in the therapy room
An exploration of the challenges faced by therapeutic practitioners working with a disorganised client and practical strategies to aid clients to settle, engage and take from the therapeutic relationship.
Should therapists embrace neuroscience? This workshop will examine the debate about its relevance to therapy, and provide an introduction to the subject so that participants can judge for themselves.
Neuroscience (or neurobiology) is the study of how the nervous system develops, its structure, and what it does. Neuroscientists focus on the brain and its impact on behaviour and cognitive thinking functions. Neuroscience is a relatively new and growing body of knowledge about the brain, body and mind and can be considered relevant to the theory and practice of counselling and psychotherapy.
Starting with an introduction to the biology of the human brain this seminar will look at the importance of neuroscience to the field of counselling and psychotherapy. We will explore the meaning of the divide between left and right hemispheres, the mind-body connection, and attachment and affect regulation. We will also explore how this knowledge can be useful to practicing therapists in their application of therapeutic techniques.
There will be presentations illustrated with slides, lots of discussion, and we will reflect together on ways to bring an understanding of the nervous system into therapeutic work.
About the Trainer:
Peter Afford is a UKCP registered psychotherapist with more than 20 years experience in private practice and employee counselling. His interest in neuroscience began in the 1990s, and he has written articles and given talks on neuroscience both in the UK and internationally.
Peter enjoys the challenge of making this alarmingly complicated subject more easily accessible, and useful to therapists of all theoretical approaches. He has been teaching neuroscience to student and graduate therapists since 2004.
