Me and my shadow: Helping clients befriend and integrate
The shadow is composed of all that we have split off, hidden, or suppressed from both ourselves and others; it is at odds with our public-facing face or image of how we would prefer to be seen. Yet this often unprocessed psychological and emotional energy repudiated self still expresses itself, in shame, insecurity and fears and how we project our wounds onto the world. “This thing of darkness I acknowledge mine ” wrote Shakespeare, yet we often refuse to accept and explore this potentially creative aspect of ourselves.
Unique to the North East, Me and My Shadow is an experiential workshop that seeks to understand the human shadow, how it might be befriended, and how it might be integrated for the benefit of our clients. Key to this will be acknowledging the importance of psychoeducation in shadow work.
We will seek to understand how the human shadow came to be disowned and how it is projected onto others and the world, what sustains it and how it might show up in a therapeutic setting. Also explored are finding our shadow in the self, family, and intimate couple relationships, and our mask to the world.
We will be using the work of Carl Jung, Ken Wilber, Iain McGilchrist, Charlie Morley, Eckhart Tolle, Tara Brach, Rob Nairn and Harville Hendrix to explore multiple perspectives on shadow.
Levels of shadow are explored, as is the concept of “shadowlight” or the potential inherent in Jung’s notion of freeing the archetypes in the Golden Shadow.
The Me and My Shadow workshop are presented in several text-heavy PowerPoint slides; while all these slides will not be read out, they will form a manual so that all delegates can return to them and deepen into the background work.
Note: by its very nature shadow work can be both challenging and triggering. Please be aware of this and take care of yourselves in the workshop.
This workshop is facilitated by Graeme Armstrong and provides 6 hours of CPD and a Certificate of Attendance is provided at the end of the course.
