This five-day course is for counsellors in their final year of training and qualified, practising counsellors and psychotherapists. It covers stage one of the BACP’s counselling young people (11-18 years) training curriculum. It is an online course held on Zoom, led by Lorna Marchant on the following dates.

  • 1st December
  • 8th December

This course provides a clear and relevant understanding of the basic professional knowledge and skills needed to be an effective counsellor for young people and will allow counsellors to explore and increase their knowledge and clinical skills in their work with young people, in line with the current expectations of the profession.

In addition, it will actively engage participants with the BACP ethical framework and will apply it to best practice in counselling young people, promoting the best outcomes for young people and their mental health and encouraging counsellors to practice in ethical and effective ways.

Course overview:

  • Introduction to the course.
  • Ethical considerations when working with young people.
  • Rights and responsibilities - relevant case law and safeguarding, and risk assessment.
  • Organisational contexts.
  • Major differences in clinical work with young people.
  • Working creatively with young people (this constitutes a whole day of the course).
  • Key theoretical concepts including developmental models of childhood and attachment theory for working with young people.
  • Case study applications and skills practice and endings with young people

The cost of the course is £400 which can be made in three instalments.
