This workshop will be delivered via Zoom

The interactive use of music within a therapeutic relationship is a vital part of music therapy. This can involve improvised or semi-structured, music-making interactions using a variety of instruments and the voice. Music therapy can also contribute to an overall reduction in symptoms in cases for anxiety, depression and personality disorders.

  • Are you interested in developing the use of listening and embodied experience within the therapeutic relationship?
  • Do you want to increase your understanding of music therapy practice in the UK?
  • Would you like to explore how to help in working with patients who struggle to make use of verbalisation?
    Workshop Aims

By the end of the session you can expect:

  • To have a better understanding of music therapy practice and its use with depression, personality disorders, psychosis, and autism.
  • To hear patients in a different way, in listening beneath the words to more fully inform one's experience of patients and possible interpretations.
  • To be able to use techniques and ideas from music therapy practice within a range of clinical contexts.

Outline

This workshop will give an introduction to music therapy practice within the UK. It will provide opportunities to consider the role music plays in everyday life as well as in the way we relate to ourselves and others. There will be opportunities to explore how techniques and theory from music therapy practice can be used to develop psycho-dynamic/analytic clinical practice within the consulting room.

This will be achieved via a combination of lecturing, case study materies, including audio from sessions, group discussions and experiential group exercises.
