Enhanced assessment skills for psychodynamic therapists
About this online event
Psychoanalytic practice workshop: enhanced assessment skills for psychodynamic counsellors and psychotherapists - challenges raised by the move to remote working.
The first meeting with a client is so much more than an inquiry about starting therapy. It is often the client’s first exposure to a psychodynamic way of thinking about their inner world and the nature of their distress. It is also a chance for you to explore the accessibility of the client’s emotional life, where there are areas of particular sensitivity, how the client will manage the impact of ongoing therapeutic work, and how to help the client make an informed choice about whether or not to proceed.
With reduced NHS provision, we are increasingly working with clients who are more troubled or difficult to engage. This highlights the importance of gaining a picture early on of the client’s personality functioning and how this relates to the problems they bring. First consultations by phone or Zoom bring additional challenges for clients and us when deciding whether therapy makes sense or not. Nonetheless, online consultations can often be an opportunity for meaningful contact to be made from which new areas of understanding can emerge. A sound assessment consultation can be a valuable intervention in its own right and a solid foundation for the therapeutic work ahead.
This workshop is divided into two parts so we can think together over time as a small group.
It will deepen your understanding of assessment as an exploratory process and will generate ideas for how to extend your own particular approach.
We will discuss the difference between information gathering and understanding and why both are important. We will talk about how to listen to conscious and unconscious communication right from the start, and how to formulate with a new client and evaluate their response to what you have to say. Fictionalised case material will be used throughout and there will be a chance to bring issues from your own assessment work in a respectful and confidential way.
Who is the workshop for?
The workshop is designed for psychodynamic practitioners or people with an interest in psychoanalytic ways of thinking about relationship-based work. We will be talking a lot about areas like transference, unconscious defences and the therapeutic frame. My style of teaching is conversational and I aim to make psychoanalytic ideas recognisable and relevant.
