A workshop for EMDR therapists to address the unique needs of adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse with expert trainer Arun Mansukhani.

Adverse events in childhood are a frequent cause of psychological disorders in adulthood, as evidenced by the scientific literature. Childhood sexual abuse is a traumatic experience that leaves lasting emotional, mental and socio-relational scars on survivors. Patients present with high impact on self-concept, guilt and disgust-related symptoms as well as fear, and high levels of dissociative symptoms. This form of abuse, often occurring in the victim’s family environment, can generate complex trauma by both action and omission, often resulting in complex PTSD.

Treatment with the EMDR-AIP model has proven to be very helpful in addressing trauma in these patients. However, modifications to the standard protocol are necessary in order to adapt it effectively to these types of cases. This workshop aims to provide participants with a structured model of assessment and intervention for adults who have experienced childhood sexual abuse, adapted to the EMDR-AIP model.

We will explore the differences between this type of trauma and acute single-occasion trauma, providing conceptual tools for the assessment of these complex cases. We will also discuss the specific treatment that should be pursued with these patients, adapting the interventions offered by the EMDR-AIP model to address the unique needs of adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse.

 Key program contents:

  • The impact of sexual abuse in childhood on the emotional, mental and socio-relational health of adults. Most frequent sequelae and manifestation of these traumas in adulthood.
