What is dialectical behaviour therapy?

Dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT) is the most researched treatment for individuals with extreme emotional sensitivity living with borderline personality disorder (BPD). It is also effective for bipolar disorder, depression, eating disorders, substance abuse and post-traumatic stress disorder. DBT applies a range of cognitive-behavioural strategies and mindfulness skills to the problems experienced by people living with emotion dysregulation. The skills taught are effective at helping people to manage their emotions, their behaviour, their relationships and their distress.

What will I learn?

Core mindfulness is one of four DBT skills modules based on the recently updated DBT Skills Training Manual by Marsha Linehan (2014). It can be attended as a stand-alone class or as part of the DBT programme. Core mindfulness class consists of four weekly sessions and is designed to teach you how to increase your awareness levels, focus better, train your attention, decrease reactivity and respond to yourself with kindness at times of suffering.

How will I learn?

New skills are presented each week and homework is assigned for participants to practise during the week. Homework is reviewed at the next group. The goal of the group is for people to gain new skills, get better at the skills they have and be able to use the skills when they are really needed, such as during times of intense emotion, crisis or conflict.

Who should join the class?

Traditionally, DBT skills group was designed to serve as a supplement to individual psychotherapy. We are offering places to people with a simultaneous involvement in individual counselling or psychotherapy and to those who are only interested in learning the skills, or those who attended DBT in the past and now want to refresh their knowledge of some of the modules. Individuals interested in beginning the full DBT programme will be assessed by a member of the Mind-Reframed Team. Entry points onto the programme are at the beginning of a module.
