There was simply too much to cover in one day so we are offering two days,

  • Friday 16 May 25 10am - 4pm, online
  • Friday 6 June 2025 10am - 4pm, online

Each day is a stand-alone event, or together, provides a comprehensive exploration of CBT core skills. To book both see the pricing options below.

Delivering high-quality cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) requires a sound knowledge of the model and a high level of skill in using the core techniques. The CBT therapist’s work is further complicated as they strive to adapt their therapeutic skills to meet the unique needs of our clients. This can be challenging, rewarding and also pressure in our clinical work as we work to deliver quality CBT therapy for the wide range of presenting problems, personality types and the personal/social circumstances of our clients.

This event is for both intermediate/advanced therapists who want to refresh their CBT knowledge/skills base and also for trainee therapists who are building their knowledge/skills base. We will explore a selection of the most commonly used techniques and give the opportunity for knowledge/skills development by reconsidering the theory, common obstacles and engaging in skill practice.

Day two

On day two we develop skills via didactic teaching, skills practice and discussion on the following tools:

  • Cognitive continuum – We consider the many different ways it can be used.
  • Behavioural experiments – Used in many ways including opening the mind to other beliefs/options, testing or consolidating a belief, testing a prediction and testing coping strategies. We consider the planning, power of post-experiment learning, attention to detail and troubleshooting what to do when a well-planned experiment goes wrong.
  • Imagery – We will explore the use of imagery in imaginal exposure and in imagery re-scripting. Additionally, we will introduce the concept and rationale of limited re-parenting via emotion-focused imagery in schema therapy.
  • Socratic questioning – Here the therapist's skill can appear low-key in the session but is supercharged in how it can help the client find their own answers. We consider the four stages and how a “Lieutenant Columbo” approach can enhance the client’s learning and empowerment.
  • Socratic questioning Vs guided discovery – We will round off the second day by considering the differences and overlaps of these two powerful techniques.
