A trans view of therapy, what we would like our therapist to know
Worried about making a mistake and not offering your best to trans clients or those questioning their identity, sexuality and/or gender?
Therapy is often an important part of this process and it's good to be informed.
There is a lot of media coverage of the trans issue and it can feel like a minefield, yet behind the articles and media storms, there are vulnerable people, who would really benefit from therapy with an informed and empathic counsellor.
This session will be a mixture of slides and discussion. Ash is happy to answer any questions you may have and the room will be a safe space for you to explore your curiosity and learn about the issue from a different perspective.
We will cover:
- language
- what is a woman/man
- sexuality and gender
- identity and change
- the journey a trans person may take
- questions, questions, questions
My experience of therapy - what may come into the room and what might not! It's not all about being Trans!
We will keep the language simple. The aim of this session is to demystify the concept of transition and to offer you support in offering therapy to trans, gender-neutral and non-binary clients. No question is too silly. We want you to be open and genuine and discuss your worries around counselling trans people.
You will leave the evening feeling more confident and able to discuss gender issues with your clients.
The session is aimed at both trainee and qualified therapists who feel they would like to know more about the topic.
I'm a qualified counsellor with a private.practice in Leigh-on-Sea. I also teach counselling skills and offer support and mentoring to newly qualified therapists. Ash is a trans woman who came out during covid and has been living as her true self since then. She realises that many trans people need therapy and wants to help you be ready for that
