In a series of three workshops, Val Thomas will present an integrative approach to the therapeutic use of mental imagery. It is designed for counsellors and psychotherapists who want to develop their understanding of the embodied imagination and how to make effective use of this in their practice. This work is based on Val’s recently published guide, Using Mental Imagery in Counselling and Psychotherapy (Routledge, 2016).

The workshops will cover the use of mental imagery for working with short term work, e.g. helping the client use images to make sense of and process presenting emotional/somatic states. However, the main focus of workshops will be on how to use imagery more consistently and effectively in ongoing clinical work. To this end, participants will be introduced to the use of ‘framing images’ which are imagery representations of fundamental dimensions of the self (theorised as conceptual metaphors). Participants will be shown how to establish these images as sites for ongoing therapeutic work and reflection.

Most therapeutic approaches accept that the client’s mental imagery offers a way of communicating with the non-conscious aspects of the self. However, each school makes therapeutic use of this means of communication in characteristically different ways. In this workshop Val will be presenting a more inclusive framework for practice, one that focuses on the dialogic process between the conscious and non-conscious mediated by mental imagery. This framework allows therapist and client to draw on different functions of mental imagery dependent on therapeutic need.

These workshops consist of theory, case studies and experiential work and are designed to be taken together as a complete introductory course.

The workshops take place on Saturdays from 10-5pm on the following dates:

  • May 12th
  • June 16th
  • July 14th.
