8 week Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) course
The National Botanic Garden of Wales
Mindfulness is the moment to moment awareness invoked by tuning into your breath and every other aspect of your life. It is achieved by purposefully paying attention in a non-judgmental way to what is going on in your body and mind, and in the world around you. This shift in awareness, brought about by staying in touch with your thoughts, feelings and surroundings from one moment to the next, can initiate seeing things differently. It may help to allow you to feel less stuck, or to have a sense of more options, more wisdom, more strength and more confidence in your abilities.
Today's mindfulness courses and workshops have been developed from Jon Kabat-Zinn’s original mindfulness-based stress reduction program at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center, to help people suffering with chronic physical pain and long-term medical conditions. It included meditation techniques to help participants become more aware of their experience in the present moment, by tuning into moment-to-moment changes in the mind and the body.
This course starts with an initial orientation session (29th August) in which you get the chance to meet the other participants, familiarise yourself with the venue and what the MBSR course is all about, and get your first experience of being in the group.
The course itself runs for eight weeks, beginning on the 5th September, on Wednesday evenings at 6.00-8.30pm.
An important part of the course is the all day session on a Saturday, between weeks six and seven (13th October). The intensive nature of this all day experience is done predominantly in silence.
It gives participants the opportunity to 'dive-in', establishing the use of mindfulness across multiple situations in life while preparing to use theses methods far beyond the conclusion of the program. It is also open to people who have already completed an eight week MBSR course with me previously as a means of being able to deepen their existing practice.
