Vicki Metzger BACP Snr. Accred
I have been working in the NHS, and privately for 22 years and see a variety of clients ranging from relationship clashes to anxiety, bereavement, depression and dealing with change. This may include looking at avenues in retirement, adjustment to singleness, or medical diagnosis. I specialise in P.T.S.D. and trauma related issues, such as abuse, accidents, loss or severe stress. I also have much experience working with the elderly.
Is Counselling For You?
Counselling helps us in a variety of ways. Knowing when to seek for some can be difficult to judge. For instance, you may be experiencing -
- unusual reactions to day to day life
- feeling sad for no apparent reason
- being irritated or impatient unnecessarily
- perhaps feeling stressed and rushed
- feeling very tired.
Any of these things could mean a time is coming to ask for some help.
Sometimes talking out what is on our mind releases a lot of pent up emotions and feelings, and this can help us sort out our thinking and what we want. At times events from the past can remain unresolved even though we were sure they were dealt with long ago.
To deal with that we may have become 'in our heads' and may need to engage with our feelings, but sometimes we are so emotional we feel overwhelmed, and need to think more solidly and trust our decisions. Together we can explore and try to see what is going on and how best to move forward.
I will be very happy to discuss things with you over the phone to see if there is a way forward and what the best help would be.

How I Work
My foundational training was psychodynamic but over the years I have trained in a variety of approaches, so they can be introduced as necessary. I have done specific training for trauma and have found EMDR psychotherapy extremely effective, not just for trauma but other difficulties as well. Addressing anxiety with mindfulness techniques or other relaxation methods may well be suggested and introduced.
Counselling For Trauma
I specialise in trauma and the underlying causes of many of the difficulties clients bring, therefore I see many people with post traumatic stress, and post traumatic stress disorder. Trauma visits itself upon us in multiple ways, but typical causes can be accidents of any kind from transport to sport, combat stress, extreme weather, birth, abuse and attacks of any kind from animals to people.
Equine Assisted Psychotherapy
For those interested in a short-term focused experiential therapy, Equine Assisted Psychotherapy is a powerful and effective approach. It is useful for individuals, couples or groups. It can be particularly helpful for people who have done other therapy and would like an alternative but it can also be effective for adolescents especially if relationships with people have become more difficult, or where trust has been severely challenged. Clients can opt for a combination of therapies but each approach works well and may particularly serve a client at a given time.
