I am Valerie Sutherland, a Psychotherapist & Counsellor and a registered member of the BACP (British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy).
As well as using the Person Centred approach, I use CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy), TA (Transactional Analysis) and Gestalt ( a form of psychotherapy built on the experiential ideal of "here and now" and relationships with others and the world).
Counselling & Psychotherapy -
How can Counselling help you? - Many people go through challenging times in their lives which create all manner of emotions like sadness, stress, anger, guilt, shame, or feeling overwhelmed. Counselling can give you a talking space to explore what is really going on inside. Some people get trapped in a cycle of negative thinking and counselling can help them turn these thoughts into a more positive way of thinking and behaving. We can also explore how your past might be affecting your behaviour today if you feel able and ready to do this.
The amount of counselling sessions is dependent on the client. For some, short term work helps them to move forward quickly whilst others benefit from longer term help. I can help with a range of issues including anxiety, depression, relationship issues, self esteem, loss & bereavement, stress, post abortion and those feeling generally overwhelmed with life.
How I work with you
I use techniques such as mood diaries, chart work, writing exercises, artwork and plasticine modelling, stonework, visualisation, breathing and relaxation techniques along with Focusing which involves using the 5 senses.
Counselling & Psychotherapy provide an opportunity for you to talk in a way which explores what is going on in your life and helps you to work towards change.
Each session lasts 50 minutes on a regular day and time per week in a safe, confidential space where you can speak about the issues which are affecting you without feeling judged.
I want to develop a trusting counselling relationship which enables you to identify your needs. I offer adult and young people one-on-one face-to-face counselling and can offer skype/email/phone counselling where circumstances require it.
Our first meeting will be an opportunity for you to decide whether I am the right counsellor to help you. We will be able to discuss how I work and what your expectations of your counselling are. I will be interested in finding out a little more about you and your reasons for seeking counselling at this time. Should you decide that you wish to engage in counselling with me, we will then arrange a series of further meetings; usually an initial contract of 5 sessions is suggested with a review at the end of this period.
Inner Child Therapy. A large part of what I do is help you acknowledge and work or play with you inner child. Inner Child Therapy focuses on the core beliefs that we hold about ourselves, about others and about the world around us. These beliefs are learned during our early childhood when we are young, and as adults our ability to determine whether the information we are basing our beliefs on is correct or not is very limited. Because this process occurs at such an early stage the information and beliefs we learn, and that continue on into adulthood, seem like an absolute truth because it has always been that way and to think any different way would seem or feel like a lie.
If we have an emotionally stable upbringing with positive experiences then the beliefs we learn about ourselves and others are likely to serve us well, as we will develop positive beliefs about ourselves and others. If we have an unstable or difficult or distressing upbringing, with little or no support, then we are likely to develop limiting and mistaken beliefs about ourselves and others, such as ‘I’m not good enough’, ‘I can’t get anything right’, ‘No one can be trusted’ etc.
These mistaken beliefs learned during childhood remain with us and continue to be active, although often without our conscious awareness, causing difficulty in our lives as they affect our decision making, self-esteem, our relationships and more. However, because these beliefs are outside of our conscious awareness we feel confused and irritated because there is a ‘conflict’ between our logic and our emotions and behaviours. Ever thought something like "I know I shouldn’t feel/think/do this... but I can't help it"? That's your unconscious inner child at work.
Using specific techniques, such as transactional analysis, your ‘adult’ part, with assistance from the therapist, is able to give your ‘child’ part appropriate information, love and support which are the components needed to change those mistaken and negative beliefs. Changing the perspective of the ‘child’ part allows both the ‘adult’ and ‘child’ part to have positive and matching beliefs about the self and experience emotional freedom.
Psycho-Spiritual Counselling & Mentoring
As well as helping you develop your relationship with your Inner Child I also assist clients through being their Spiritual Mentor.

I receive regular monthly Supervision.
I specialize in counselling couples and offer separation counselling and mediation for separating couples and families therapy.
My other specialism is supporting those with Autism Spectrum Conditions such as Asperger's Syndrome and also those with illness and terminal illness such as Cancer. To support relatives and families and friends (including young carers) who would like space to talk things over and gain helpful strategies to understand and work with what life challenge they are up against and to feel supported in doing this.
