Tonia Priestley MBACP, Counselling for Adults and Young People
The Downley Holistic Centre
I am a qualified and experienced counsellor providing psychological therapy for adults, teenagers and children in a relaxing, professional and confidential setting.
I offer a range of therapeutic models including Person Centred Counselling, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy Techniques and Creative Therapy. I have also completed an advanced diploma at The National Centre for Eating Disorders in working with Anorexia, Bulimia and Obesity. This allows me to draw from various approaches, tailoring each session to best suit your individual needs and requirements.
Sometimes in life you are faced with difficulties, these situations can be distressing and can often escalate leaving you feeling that you’re simply not coping. Making the step to ask for help can feel daunting, perhaps you have tried with family and friends but they don’t understand what it’s really like for you. I have been trained to listen differently and will try and understand what life is like for you without judgement.
I will hopefully gain your trust and in the safety of the counselling room you can explore your thoughts, feelings and current coping strategies without any pressure or judgement. With my support you may begin to see different perspectives or come to terms with difficult situations that you are unable to change. In doing so it can help reduce confusion and encourage proactive change and so help you to move forward.
Importantly, counselling can empower you to overcome your difficulties, to grow and develop and move forward to a happier life.
Teenagers and Children
I have seen how feelings and emotions are sometimes bottled up and ignored; alternatively they are expressed through destructive behaviour such as anger, self harming, drugs or alcohol. This can cause both immediate and future damage to individuals. All these emotions become intense and counselling offers a chance to explore them. I believe early intervention can often alleviate problems allowing a more fulfilling life.
I have worked successfully with adults, teenagers and children with many different issues including anxiety, depression, stress, anger, relationship difficulties, bereavement and self esteem issues.

Creative Therapy for Children
For some children expressing themselves purely through a ‘talking therapy’ is a difficult prospect. I will work with a client’s strengths using a variety of creative tools, such as art, clay, sand trays and puppets. These tools are used to communicate issues, emotions and feelings and can provide an insight into any conflicts that may be present. I often see the success of integrating these therapeutic methods empowering the young person to move forward.
