About me

Time2Shine is a Play and Creative arts Therapy Service that provides individual and group therapy for children aged 4-18 years. Therapy, in most cases is non-directive, whereby children have access to the therapists tool kit and uses this to overcome thoughts and feelings that they are unable to express verbally. Within group therapy, there are elements of more directive work focusing on an issue that is being experienced by each group member i.e. low self-esteem, bereavement etc. It is normally conducted with the child’s school, in a private room at the same time, on the same day, once per week. Time2Shine also has associate therapists that are peripatetic and able to travel to whichever location is most convenient.

Play Therapy is a versatile therapy and is accessible to most children regardless of their abilities/capabilities and allows children space and time to work out what is going on for them and to experiment with feelings and behaviours that may not be appropriate to do outside therapy. Therapists work within a framework and ethical structure that creates an accepting, non-judgmental empathic environment for children to feel free and comfortable to be their true self. There’s opportunities for the clients to use a sand tray, work with puppets, use musical instruments, art materials and do role play, so there are many ways children can use these ‘tools’ to help them work out their difficulties and how they may resolve these.

Time2Shine Play Therapy Service also provides Cognitive Behaviour Therapy for children and parent/carers. The Therapy for children and young people are either on a 1 to 1 or group basis. CBT allows clients an opportunity to focus on changing and challenging unhelpful cognitive distortions and behaviours. It can help regulating emotions, and developing personal coping strategies. This is particularly helpful for adults, children and young people who experience anxiety, depression and other mental health difficulties.

Non Violent Resistance (NVR) is offered to parents/carers as a therapeutic parenting programme that is particularly helpful for parents/cares who are experiencing child to parent violence, although the strategies are effective for parents/carers who are struggling with challenging behaviour or experiencing blocked care. This can be offered to individual parents/carers and on a group basis (3 to 5 families)

Time2Shine Play Therapy Service also provides MIM Assessments, which are completed with parent/s and child and explores the relationship between the two people (their interactions, NOT their attachment). This assessment informs Theraplay planning, although can also aid in helping to determine appropriateness of custody arrangements, adoption and fostering placements.

The Theraplay treatment model aims to replicate the interactions that occur within a healthy parent-infant relationship, as much as possible. Therefore the range of activites that make up the daily interactions between a mother and her baby can fall into four dimensions. These include nurture, challenge, engagement and structure.

Associates therapists are open and honest with families. Preregular reviews are undertaken to assess the effectiveness of therapy, whereby parents, social workers and childcare practitioners are invited to attend. Brief reports are also provided at the end of therapy that discuss the therapeutic process that has been undertaken and further recommendations.
