Tania Freeman - MBACP Creative Therapist
I am a child centred creative therapist specialising in working with primary school children and those transitioning to senior school.
Creative therapy is not just “play" or “arts and crafts”. Art created within the context of a therapeutic relationship and creative imaginative play, through storytelling, working with toy figures or drama/masks, is intended to help clients not only to engage in self-exploration, but also involves purposeful meaning-making through visually expressing experiences, perceptions, feelings and thoughts in order to help make the unknown known.
Creative therapy provides access to the roots of difficulties, identifying the embedded triggers underneath behaviours and unearthing the past experiences that maybe impacting on the present. I use specific tools and techniques to address particular issues such as bereavement, DV, family breakdown, anger, anxiety, self-esteem, body image, selective mutism, attachment difficulties as well as gaps in developmental stages. Art has also proven useful for enhancing emotional literacy and empathy for those with autism and Asperger's. Although obstensively client led I also work directively and have a vast toolkit of ways of working in order to bring about self awareness and greater mastery over thoughts, feelings and behaviours. The idea of creative therapy is to work with you as client, at your pace and your understanding, enpowering you towards self governess. It is about modelling a nurturing secure attachment where feelings and needs are met, acknowledged and accepted without judgement not to create dependance but as a guide.
To explore whether this way of working and I, could be right for you or your child I offer an initial 30 minute or 40 minute appointment as a brief introduction. There is no pressure to continue after the initial session. Frequency of sessions will be one of the things we will discuss in the first session based upon availability and need.
I also run workshops for parents and children as well as creativity groups.
