About me

My name is Sylvia Chew. I am an experienced counsellor working with adults in East London.

Underpinning my work is my belief that every person has the right to reach their potential, and that change is possible. As an integrative therapist, I draw on a number of therapeutic theories, including relational, developmental and trauma-based approaches and can tailor these to meet your needs.

Counselling is a powerful way to develop your insight, to make changes in your life, and to provide a space for you to talk freely about anything you wish. You may be seeking counselling because you have experienced a life event such as a trauma or bereavement that you want to think through. Or perhaps you are at a point of transition in your life, considering a relationship change, whether to have children, or changes to your working life. You may be feeling depressed, anxious or have low self-esteem.

Counselling can offer you the space to reflect on, and explore, those aspects of your life which you may be finding hard to understand. My role is to accompany you on your journey, at a pace that works for you and in a safe, confidential space.

I am a registered member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (MBACP) and adhere to their code of ethics. I am an LGBTQI+ affirming therapist.

Training, qualifications & experience

I have a Post Graduate Diploma in Integrative Counselling ( Minster Centre, London) and Mentoring ( Kingston University) and have lived and worked in London for most of my adult life. I have worked in private practice for several years and also have experience in the charity sector, including a hospice-based bereavement service.

Prior to training as a counsellor, I worked as both an adult and children’s social worker. I was privileged to work with adults as they navigated the challenges of living in an ableist society and took as my starting point a social model of disability.

My work with children and their families has given me an in-depth knowledge of the impact of poverty, discrimination, abuse, neglect, addiction, mental ill-health and domestic abuse on family functioning and our experience of growing up.

I have experience working with a range of issues, including :

  • Anxiety
  • Bereavement
  • Career change
  • Childlessness is both by choice and not by choice.
  • Childhood abuse and neglect
  • Dating
  • Depression
  • Domestic Abuse
  • Disordered eating
  • Employment instability.
  • Fertility and pregnancy.
  • Intra-familial dispute and relationship breakdown
  • Low self esteem
  • Retirement
  • Relationship breakdown.
  • Work-related stress

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
