About me

My name is Steve and I have 11 years of experience working as a qualified Counsellor, operating in the Barnstaple and North Devon area. I am a registered member of the BACP (the British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists).

Life can be difficult and your friends and family aren’t always able to help, leaving you feeling sad and alone. I want to be there with you and help you find a place where you will feel happier and better about life. I aim to bring warmth and empathy into my counselling relationships and I will treat you with care, compassion, acceptance and respect. I will work in partnership with you to support and enable you to look at your concerns in ways that suit you best. I will not judge or advise you, but I will offer you a confidential space that offers you the freedom to explore your concerns openly and honestly in your own safe space, where you can say the unsayable if you want to.

Counselling is not just appropriate in the extreme situations you might face, but can also be helpful at any time in your life, allowing you to gain more insight into who you are, your relationships and your life generally. As a member of BACP, I adhere to their Ethical Framework for Good Practice which means that I will always work safely and ethically with you putting your best interests at the heart of my work with you. I offer a Person-centred and Humanistic approach. I can offer you sessions for individuals and couples on weekdays and evenings, including weekends.
I am also a qualified Counselling Supervisor and teach the Counselling qualifications at Petroc College.

BACP

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Key details

Wheelchair user access

Wheelchair user access

Wheelchair-accessible premises should have step-free access for wheelchair users and individuals who are unable to climb stairs. If a Counsellor's premises aren't step-free, they may offer alternative services such as telephone/web-based appointments, home visits, or meeting clients in different location, so you can choose the option that suits you best.

You can contact the Counsellor to discuss the options available.

Under the Equality Act 2010 service providers have a duty to make reasonable adjustments to ensure that individuals with disabilities can access their service. You can read more about reasonable adjustments to help you to access services on the CAB website.

Supervision

In person

I am a qualified supervisor and my aim is to help other Counsellors to explore their encounters with their Clients by helping them focus on what happens in the sessions, their relationship with the Clients and work through any strategies that they feel might be helpful.
