About me

My name is Steve and I am a qualified, experienced, counsellor registered with the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP). I am also a qualified Counselling Supervisor. As a member of BACP, I adhere to their Ethical Framework for Good Practice, which ensures that I work safely and ethically with my clients’ best interests always at the heart of my work. I also work as the Core teacher and Program Manager for counselling courses at Petroc College and am therefore constantly reinforcing my learning and my professional development, which I firmly believe enriches the knowledge and experience I can offer to my clients.

I offer counselling and psychotherapy in the Barnstaple and North Devon area, within easy reach of Braunton, South Molton, Bideford and Ilfracombe. I offer individual adult counselling, including the flexibility of both day time and evening appointments. I know that people often feel concerned about the idea of having counselling and that it can be difficult to know which practitioner to approach. My personal philosophy is that it is of paramount importance that a client feels they can trust and feel safe within the counselling relationship and my aim is always to provide an environment where this exists.

As someone who uses a Person Centred and Integrative approach, I believe I bring warmth and empathy into my counselling practice and always treat clients with care, compassion, acceptance, and respect. I work in a way that supports and enables a client to work through their issues in a way that suits them best, where they will not be judged or advised, and where they will find the freedom to explore their problems openly and honestly in their own space and time.

Many people believe that counselling is only appropriate in extreme situations, but my belief is that it can be of benefit for so many different issues that we may be experiencing in our lives at any one time. It can also allow us to gain more awareness and insight into ourselves and our own behaviour.
As a professional counsellor I aim to work together with you to explore your concerns and difficulties and to enable you to find ways to move forward in your life. I operate in a number of different locations in the Barnstaple area and each session would last for at least one hour.

Member organisations

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy

BACP is one of the UK’s largest professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy. Therapists registered with the Association fall into a number of different membership categories such as Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP and Registered Member MBACP (Accred), each standing for different levels of training and experience. MBACP (Accred) and MBACP (Snr Accred) members have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by the Association.

Registered members can be found on the BACP Register, which was the first register to achieve Accredited Voluntary Register status issued by the Professional Standards Authority. Individual Members will have completed an appropriate counselling and/or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but will not appear on the BACP Register until they've progressed to Registered Member MBACP status.

All members are bound by a Code of Ethics & Practice and a Complaints Procedure. Accredited by the Professional Standards Authority.

Wheelchair user access

Wheelchair-accessible premises should have step-free access for wheelchair users and individuals who are unable to climb stairs. If a counsellor's premises aren't step-free, they may offer alternative services such as telephone/web-based appointments, home visits, or meeting clients in different location, so you can choose the option that suits you best.

You can contact the counsellor to discuss the options available.

Under the Equality Act 2010 service providers have a duty to make reasonable adjustments to ensure that individuals with disabilities can access their service. You can read more about reasonable adjustments to help you to access services on the CAB website.
