About me

I am a fully accredited and registered Counsellor/Psychotherapist specialising in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) and Compassion Focused Therapy. I am a warm, empathetic professional who will see your unique experience and will ensure that you feel valued and not judged. I have over 20 years’ experience of working as a therapist with adults and young people within the NHS, CAMHS, schools and children's charities, and will help you overcome anxiety, low mood and reflect on your current and past relationships.

CBT has been well researched and is advocated to be one of the most effective approaches for treating anxiety and depression. You will learn to understand and then respond in a more helpful manner to your thoughts, habits and behaviours. CBT takes into account how evolution, our upbringing and society shape the belief systems we hold about ourselves, others and the world around us.

At the beginning of any therapeutic relationship, it is important to build a safe and supportive space and I am able to relate to clients by showing understanding that it takes courage to seek help and that all humans can struggle with challenges and difficulties.

I work collaboratively with a compassionate approach, by encouraging you to be kind to yourself, validate your strengths, help you identify what is making you feel stuck with your problems and develop alternative ways of thinking and responding.

All humans have an innate tendency to focus on the negative aspects of themselves and their lives. I will help you to recognise the self-blaming mind and develop insight and strategies to overcome habits of worry, avoidance and rumination.

I have a particular interest in working with the self-critic as I have seen over the years how our self-blaming and critical inner voice can impact upon our anxious and depressed states of mind.

Bringing in compassion to the self-critic by both understanding the function of the inner voice and also coming to terms with how unhelpful the inner-critic can be, can facilitate a new way of responding to ourselves and with our relationships with others.

How to start:

A course of CBT can range from 6-20 sessions, it is typical to generally see clients for 12 sessions. Your appointments will be 50 minutes long and held at the same time every week.

The first session is an assessment appointment during which you can discuss your difficulties and I will help you set achievable goals to elicit change in your life. Please feel free to contact me by email and we can arrange a telephone call to discuss any questions you may have.
