About me

Hello, my name is Sophie and I am here to listen, if you feel you want to talk. I am committed to providing a safe, confidential and non-judgemental environment, where we can work through your concerns together and focus on what is important to you. I am an experienced, friendly, professional counsellor and psychotherapist offering appointments at my home in Cranleigh, Surrey.

People often seek counselling when life feels uncertain or out of control. Many of us may experience difficult and and unsettling feelings which are hard to process, particularly in the midst of a pandemic.

I offer counselling via online video link (zoom), over the telephone, face to face or walk and talk if suitable.

Please do get in touch to have an informal chat first or to ask any questions you may have.

___________________________________________________________________

By talking together, we can unravel what is troubling you to gain deeper understanding of the place you find yourself in, building your awareness and self-acceptance in order to bring about positive change in your life.

Life can be challenging and hard to make sense of at times. Most of us will at some point experience anxiety and emotional distress in either our personal or professional lives .My work encompasses both work and personal related issues, including: relationship difficulties, self-esteem, self-confidence, sexuality, anger, long-term illness, loss, bereavement, anxiety and depression,

Sometimes we are able to create our own methods of coping or work things through by talking to family and friends, but at other times they are just too close to be able to help, we may feel overwhelmed and struggle to cope with our experiences alone. At times like this counselling offers you the opportunity for a dedicated space and time to talk openly about whatever is concerning you, and share your most difficult feelings with someone who can help you make sense of them and find a way forward.

I am a humansitic counsellor working with both adults and adolescents on either an open-ended or short-term basis (up to 12 sessions) according to what is best suited for your needs. I offer a safe, respectful and confidential space where you can talk of whatever is troubling you, without fear of judgement.

I have a particular interest in working with clients experiencing high levels of anxiety or stress, relationship issues, low confidence and self-esteem and bereavement.

I am also particularly passionate about working with adolescents who increasingly experience high levels of pressure, stress and anxiety due to the experiences they encounter.

I offer a free 30 minute face to face meeting so you can see if you think counselling is right for you.

EXPERIENCE

I currently work part-time as a school counsellor and spent several years working for the NHS (Surrey Youth Counselling Service) as a youth counsellor, working with vulnerable adolescents aged 12-24 in Guildford and the surrounding areas. I have a special interest in working with this age group who increasingly suffer with anxiety and depression due to the pressures and experiences they face. My work includes working with those who have experienced domestic abuse, neglect, bereavement, self-harm or are affected by long-term illness, as well as issues at school and within the family.

I also have extensive experience working with loss and spent 4 years working for Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice Care as a Counsellor working with patients and their families coping with the effects of chronic or terminal illness and bereavement. Navigating our way towards death or through grief can be challenging and hard to talk about, especially with those closest to us. I have a special interest in this area, helping individuals to explore their multifaceted and complex spectrum of emotional, physical, cognitive and behavioural responses to loss and change.

I have a particular interest on the impact of stress on both the mind and body, and have written and delivered stress management workshops to teams in business.

I have also spent 2 years working for a North Surrey based charity offering counselling for up to a year for adults experiencing anxiety, depression, relationship issues, and more.

HOW I WORK

I am a Humanistic Counsellor which means I work with what is happening in the 'Here and Now' of our lives. Our past experiences and relationships are still very much relevant but are explored in terms of how they impact us in the present.

Whilst the reasons people come to counselling can be similar, each individual’s experience is unique.  My approach and philosophy to working is based upon the Humanistic values of counselling and psychotherapy.   My emphasis is on an integrative framework of supporting theories, drawing flexibly from Person-Centred Therapy, Gestalt, and Existential philosophy, using interventions which focus on raising a deeper awareness and understanding of our feelings and behaviours, so we can bring about positive change towards a more fulfilling existence.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.
