Shirley Thatcher (DPS Counsellor) Registered MBACP
Welcome. I offer a professional and confidential counselling service for individuals and couples. I work integratively which means that I am able to adapt my style of counselling to meet the needs of each person. The main approaches I use are person-centred, gestalt and psychodynamic. I work in an honest and down to earth way.
I am a registered member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP). This means that I work within a code of conduct and ethics as directed by BACP and am accountable for my work. I am also a member of CAPPP which is a networking organisation for counsellors and psychotherapists in private practise in the south west of England.
I offer short-term and long-term counselling.
I usually work from home in a village just a 5 minute drive from J.19 of the M5 so am within easy access of Wales, Bristol and surrounding areas such as Portishead, Clevedon, Nailsea and Backwell. However during the COVID-19 crisis, all sessions will be virtual or by telephone until it is safe to work face-to-face.
Training, qualifications & experience
I completed my diploma at the University of the West of England, Bristol.
I have worked as a volunteer counsellor for Hopes Place, which is an agency that provides a counselling service for women and men facing pregnancy related issues. I have also worked for Mothers for Mothers, which provides counselling for women who have post natal illness.
I have experience of working with a wide range of issues including depression, anger management, anxiety, trauma, low self-esteem, addictions, eating disorders, panic attacks, self-harm and relationship issues.
I also have considerable experience in working with pregnancy related issues such as fertility, crisis pregnancy, abortion, adoption, miscarriage, birth trauma, still-birth, loss and bereavement. I also work with women with postnatal depression and issues relating to bonding between parent and child and feelings of not enjoying parenting.
I have training in working with young people, couples and cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT), Dis-ordered eating as well as Transactional Analysis.
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
BACP is one of the UK’s largest professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy. Therapists registered with the Association fall into a number of different membership categories such as Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP and Registered Member MBACP (Accred), each standing for different levels of training and experience. MBACP (Accred) and MBACP (Snr Accred) members have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by the Association.
Registered members can be found on the BACP Register, which was the first register to achieve Accredited Voluntary Register status issued by the Professional Standards Authority. Individual Members will have completed an appropriate counselling and/or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but will not appear on the BACP Register until they've progressed to Registered Member MBACP status.
All members are bound by a Code of Ethics & Practice and a Complaints Procedure. Accredited by the Professional Standards Authority.
Accredited register membership
Accredited Register Scheme
The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.

Attachment Issues between mothers and babies.
My fee is £35 for individuals and £45 for couples for the initial counselling session which lasts one hour. In this time you will get the opportunity to tell me about yourself and ask questions. After this if we decide to continue, I charge £45 per 60 minute session (or £60 for couples for 75 minutes). However, I have some reduced priced sessions which I provide to students and those whose income does not easily allow them to access this service. Please enquire about fees if you think that money is a problem.
