My name is Sharon Flower and I have been working with children for over 12 years. I have also been working with adults for six years. I am a Play/Creative arts Therapist using a non directive psychotherapeutic approach, using sand tray therapy, creative art, clay and creative visualizations. Many experiences in our lives are derived from our childhood experiences and continue to drive our adult behaviours. Sometimes our early experiences cannot be connected to by words.
Using sand tray therapy and creative arts such as painting, clay and creative visualizations we are able to connect to early childhood feelings, helping us to release us of old unwanted behaviours, patterns and fears which continue to play out in our adult relationships. Many of us do not know that these fears or patterns exist, only being aware of behaviours or fears in the present. Being artistic is not a condition of the therapy it is merely a medium of expression to understand our emotions.
I work both in Private practice in my therapy centre in Sidcup and in schools in the Bexley area. I have also trained as a play therapy trainer and run therapeutic play courses for parents. This enable parents to offer therapeutic play sessions at home. I work with children from the age of 4-11 with the play therapy and I use Creative art therapy for adolescents and adults 12-adult.
For children I use play therapy which encompasses the sand tray therapy, arts, clay, puppets, drama, stories and much more. Play is the natural medium of expression for children and through play children are able to communicate fears, anxieties, anger or past experiences. Children who find it difficult to express their feelings, or may be stuck due to trauma, will find it easier to be able to communicate through the medium of play and creative arts. For some children they have experienced a developmental delay due to trauma, or maybe a loss of an attachment figure. Play Therapy can help children to repair developmental delays and neurobiological difficulties, which can affect a child's emotional capacity. Understanding a child and what they are communicating can help remove unwanted behaviours and repair relationships.
