Dr Sarah Tomlinson (DClinpsych, MSc HealthPsychol, BSc.Hons.)
I have bases in Preston, Salford and Northwich.
I am a clinical psychologist with many years experience of working with adults experiencing a wide range of difficulties, but primarily anxiety and depression. I have a doctorate in clinical psychology, completed in 2007. I have additional training in specific therapies eg Dialectical Behaviour Thetapy which is a therapy focused on emotion regulation skills.
Clinical psychologists differ from some practitioners in that we start by developing a comprehensive formulation ie an understanding of your specific difficulties: why they have occurred, what makes them worse etc. We use this to guide the process, as therapy must be based on and guided by your specific situation.
I draw from a range of models, including CBT, mindfulness and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. However, I believe the most important element of therapy is feeling connected, validated and understood, and from this, being gently and kindly offered an understanding of experiences and offered new perspectives where appropriate.
All difficulties experienced can be made sense of, and will have probably provided some kind of function at some point, but may now be holding you back or causing you distress, or perhaps even shame. We would work together to look at what thoughts or behaviours might be taking you away from what is important to you, why, and how to change it.
In addition, I also specialise in Autism and/or learning disabilities. As well as diagnosis, I offer 1:1 therapy and support following a diagnosis or for people experiencing distress.
