About me

I am a professional counsellor with a gentle, calm and empathic approach to my clients. My belief is that if people who are experiencing difficulties in their lives are able to talk to someone who treats them with openness and respect, in a safe and confidential environment, then they can find their own way forward.

Sometimes people find themselves so stressed and anxious that they have difficulty in disentangling the threads that make up the whole problem. I will help you separate the threads so that the problem and the solutions become clearer.

I have experience of working with a wide range of problems including depression, suicidal thoughts, anxiety, stress, low self-esteem, relationship issues, family issues, separation and divorce, addiction, anger management and bereavement.

Work with Eating Disorders

I have a particular interest in Eating Disorders including Bulimia Nervosa, Anorexia Nervosa and Binge-Eating Disorder. Eating disorders can be devastating for sufferers and can destroy the kind of life a person wants to live, affecting work, relationships, friendships and family life. For many people an eating disorder is something they suffer with in secret, ashamed of their relationship with food. However, this need not be the case. By exploring an eating disorder in the counselling environment and looking at the different areas that might be maintaining the disorder, huge changes can be made.

Work with Young People

In my capacity as a University Counsellor I work extensively with the 18 to 25 year old age group and am familiar with the kind of problems that this age group encounter. I have helped young people grow in confidence, self-esteem and motivation and this has lead to an improvement in both academic work and employment opportunities.

Work with Addiction

Having worked for an East Anglia charity dealing specifically in alcohol dependency I can offer help and support for people struggling with this particular problem and other addictions. When working with addictions I use not only counselling skills but also a number of motivational techniques.

Stress in the Workplace

Stress at work can severely affect how a person functions. Work issues can be insidious, they can range from vague feelings of being undermined or deskilled to a feeling that the pressure to work harder and harder or for longer and longer hours is intolerable. As a counsellor for staff in a large institution I can offer help sorting out boundaries and help people recognise what changes might be needed to make their time in the workplace happier and more satisfying.

Relationship and Couples Counselling

People may experience difficulty in a relationship for all kinds of reasons. Sometimes it is a specific problem that needs attention but it could equally be that for some reason that isn't initially obvious, a relationship just isn't working in the way it used to. Whatever the situation I will try and help.

Sometimes the relationship that is in difficulty is that of a couple but equally it can be the relationship between a parent and child, siblings, colleagues or even friends. It can be extremely helpful to have a third party provide a neutral space where intense feelings can be explored and communication can be re-established.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
