About me

Type of Counsellor

I am an Integrative counsellor, and have been practicing since 2012.  I initially trained as a person-centred counsellor, but have gone on to integrate other therapeutic approaches into my practice, such as Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy, Emotionally Focused Therapy, Solution Focused Therapy and Systemic Therapy.  I am qualified in these areas, and draw on different approaches and interventions depending on client presenting issues and needs.

My core value is the capacity for change and growth, and that this is possible if there is an individual desire to fulfil this and a supportive nurturing environment to facilitate it. I believe in the importance of enhancing autonomy and empowerment, so individuals are enabled to make positive choices. I offer unconditional positive regard for human experience and non-judgementalism in my approach. I place the needs of the individual at the heart of my practice, and the importance of health and well-being in the functioning of the individual and their interactions. I listen to the whole of the person as part of my empathic understanding and to acknowledge the life stories and experiences of the individual.  I believe this is so important for self-awareness and to enable change and growth to take place in the short term as well as wider context.  In my practice I want to help in making a difference to people's lives.

Areas of Practice: Young People, Individuals and Couples
I provide therapeutic support for relationship issues, bereavement, illness, anxiety, depression, self-harm, substance misuse and other areas. My background is in education and charity organisations, which has enabled me to work with a range of issues. I will openly collaborate with the individual client regarding their presenting issues, and referring on to other specialist services if this is appropriate.

Please contact me in office hours (9.00am-5.00pm) if unavailable please leave a message and I will call you back at my earliest convenience.  If calling at the weekend be assured I will call you back on Monday morning.

Other areas of counselling I deal with

In the first session we will complete an initial assessment to understand the presenting issues, and decide together whether I can be useful therapeutically in facilitating the change that you want to achieve.  I work with a broad range of issues and if we decide that other specialist agency support would be more useful to you, we will discuss referral options.

£40 set fee for a 50 minute counselling session. I am happy to negotiate this fee on occasion depending on client circumstance.

Initial assessment session is £25

Further information

The first appointment is a 'getting to know' session.  This is where you are able to explore with me what presenting problem(s) are featuring in your life and what you would like to achieve from counselling sessions and how I might be helpful to you . We will also discuss confidentiality in our therapeutic work, and I will explain some key information regarding the boundaries of our therapeutic relationship, as well as attaining some background information from you. All of this information gathering in the session will help establish whether further sessions would be useful and whether you feel happy to proceed with counselling support with myself. Please feel free to ask any questions about the counselling process so that you can feel   relaxed and informed about my counselling practice.   We will then typically sign a counselling agreement together which defines our work and expectations. You will be offered a copy of this too to take away. In this session there willl be discussion of whether counselling work would be preferable either weekly or fortnightly, and a time slot for ongoing sessions will also be decided..

In the second session onwards, therapeutic work will commence in order to address presenting issues and other areas as they may emerge.  We will typically review progress after six sessions, and together decide whether further sessions would be useful after this point, and future areas of work that would be useful to you. We will keep in mind how I could continue to help you therapeutically.  Sometimes we discuss referral to other specialist agencies,  if appropriate and I help scaffold this transition if useful.  I always collaborate with you in deciding what work is useful therapeutically.

All you need to do initially is to make contact with me, either via telephone or email.  If you leave a message for me, I will get back to you as soon as possible to instigate making a first appointment.
