About me

I am an experienced and qualified Chartered Counselling Psychologist. I offer individual talking therapy for a range of psychological and emotional concerns for adults and young people (usually 11 years old and upwards). I also offer supervision and personal therapy for trainee therapists and parenting consultancy for parents who are struggling to manage their children's emotional difficulties.

What to expect during Counselling

Our first session together is an opportunity for you to find out if you feel at ease and comfortable so that we may work together. I will explore a little about your life story and what has brought you to therapy. If I don’t think I’m the right person to help then I will talk you through where you might find them.

It is vital in therapy that we are both clear about what you hope to gain from the sessions and I will help you to work out what this is. This way we can begin to work together to either help you to change those things which you would like to or perhaps to accept and make sense of those things you cannot change.

Sometimes people feel uncertain about whether therapy can be helpful for them and it can be very scary to reveal intimate feelings and details about your life to someone you do not know. It is important that you feel comfortable with your therapist and I would urge you to try more than one therapist until you find someone with whom you feel comfortable. It is important that you feel able to trust your therapist and that they understand you and what you want to work on in the sessions.

Please have a look around my website (www.counsellingpsychology.me.uk) if you want to know more or contact me by phone/email.

Further information

What is parenting consultancy?

Parenting consultancy is not therapy for you or your child. However, it is a place to think about relationships between you and your co-parents, and you and your child. Together with a therapist who has a background in working with parents and children you might consider some of the following things to help you to figure out the way forward:

  • Your own experience of being parented
  • Yourself as a child
  • Experience/expectations/hopes of being parents
  • The journey so far and how it has shaped you
  • What you would like life to be as parents and as a family
  • What you want your child to be-your best hopes for them and their future
  • How do you set yourselves up to be the parents you want to be

Consultancy comes from the perspective that the child’s behaviours or difficulties are a communication from them that something is not working well in the family. Children (especially young children and babies) are often unable to articulate in words what it is that they are feeling. Parent consultancy is a space to have a foot in your child’s world and try to understand what they might be struggling with in a non-blaming way.

You’ll need to feel heard and understood and to be able to figure out what is working well and what your struggles are. Just having the space to talk things through outside of the chaos of family life can provide a peaceful reflection on what can often feel overwhelming and infuriating.

Therapy for your child (over 11)

If you are considering therapy for your child it is vital to find a therapist who you feel can meet the needs of your child. Make sure you feel comfortable with your therapist and that they have the appropriate experience and expertise to offer what you need. When you find the therapist you think might be able to help ask them about anything further you are unsure of and do not be afraid to see more than one person until you find the right therapist for your family.

It can be hard to not know what your child is talking about in their therapy sessions but the confidentiality of sessions is paramount in order to help them to feel safe that they can share what they are struggling with knowing it will not be shared with anyone else (except if there are serious risks to anyone's life). I will always let you know in a general sense if the therapy is progressing ok and if at any point a young person does not want to continue therapy this will always be supported as it is important they can choose whether or not they wish to engage.

Other Services I offer

I can offer training, clinical supervision and consultation for various professionals including education, social care, health care and child care settings amongst others. I can put together a flexible package of support to meet the needs of your team. My fee will usually start at £120.00 per hour.
