Sam Harris Registered MBACP
Hi, my name is Sam Harris;
I am the lead Counsellor, working at the SJH Counselling centre. The centre is a confidential, comfortable, wheelchair accessible environment. Low cost Adult Counselling is now available with a Student Counsellor.
I am a qualified to work with Adult, Child/ Adolescent Counsellor. I also work as a family therapist.
An area of counselling I have a specialism in is clients that have special needs and siblings/family members who are affected by disability or illness. I have created a wheelchair and sensory sympathetic environment. My own family history has encouraged my interest in working within this area. I use this to attune my empathy and approach, taking into account the barriers to counselling disability may present.
The types of disabilities I have worked with have included, mild to severe Autistic spectrum disorders, mild to severe learning disabilities, deafness, Downs Syndrome, Speech and Language disorders, Dyslexia, and Neurological disorders. I have also worked with ODD, ADHD, and Chronic pain.
When working with adult clients, I believe that we have an unconscious mind that holds our interpretation of important, maybe painful events from childhood, adolescence and early adult life. They can leave their imprint. Having moved my counselling focus in and practising on a daily basis, with children and adolescents, I use the psychological perspectives and analysis in my adult work. I can bring this knowledge and facilitate an awareness on how this may influence any current problems that have brought you to counselling.
Areas that you may wish to explore; relationship issues, Family relationship issues, loss/bereavement, separation/divorce, anxiety/stress, generalised anxiety, self harm, panic attacks, depression, Low self esteem/confidence, illness/disability, eating problems, trauma, any area that you feel you would like support in exploring.
The SJH Counselling centre has a dedicated child space where I can use play techniques, sand work, creative media & non directive conversation. Within my work I help your child/Adolescent understand their internal world, thoughts and feelings. My work is client-led so that your child/adolescent finds their own way of expressing their worries and feelings. I look at how this may affect their day to day life and make sense of what is happening around them. I offer confidentiality to your child /adolescent so they feel free to talk and share anything.
Children/Adolescents can struggle with attachment issues, anger, sibling disability, parental mental health problems and addictions, anxiety, phobias, parental separation, self harm, identity issues, bullying, misuse of social media, transition, loss ,school refusal, eating problems, low self esteem/confidence.
If you want to ask me anything about the services the SJH Counselling centre offers or you want to talk about whether Counselling would be right for you or your family, please feel able to get in touch.
