About me

Hello and Welcome, thank you for visiting my profile. Its great that you have taken this first step along your counselling journey, I know it can feel a little scary at this point. I imagine you have lots of thoughts and questions running through your head such as "am I doing the right thing?" "can I trust the counsellor?" "will I be asked to lay on a couch like I've seen in the movies" and many other such questions.

I would like to reassure you, you do not lay on a couch, we would usually sit in chairs or on the floor if you prefer so we are at the same level. As for doing the right thing, only you will know the answer to that, after we have spoken on the phone and met for an initial assessment you may well decide that I am not the right counsellor for you and that is OK, you need to feel at ease and comfortable so we can work together to move you forward. As for "can you trust me?", the sessions are confidential and what is said in the room stays in the room, there are exceptions to this and and one exception is that  if you are at risk in anyway, my priority is to keep you safe. We will talk more about confidentiality at the assessment.

I am a warm and approachable person and offer a confidential space for you to explore your thoughts and feelings, I believe that the building of rapport within our relationship builds the trust too. My foundation is to come from a place of congruence (genuine/being real), unconditional positive regard (accepting you as you are) and being empathic (being able to walk beside you metaphorically and understand how life is for you).

I am fully insured, DBS checked and a registered member of the BACP. I attend regular supervision in accordance with BACP requirement.

Training, qualifications & experience

I started my counselling career in 2003 after being made redundant, four courses later I gained the level 4 Advanced Diploma in Integrative counselling in 2009.

Along the way I have volunteered with Victim Support outreach, then trained as a Domestic Abuse outreach worker. I  went on to work with people that struggled with their alcohol intake, this was with Addaction. I also co facilitated relapse prevention groups. In 2008 I set up a counselling practice within a local GP surgery, here I saw a diverse range of clients referred to me by the GP's. The counselling grew and I took on trainee placements and mentored them during their Diploma. I am currently working as a counsellor in a boarding/day school seeing students from yr 7 upward to 6th formers.

I have tutored counselling courses at level 2 and 5.

I have a Diploma in CBT(cognitive behavioural therapy) and offer this way of working if we decide this is appropriate depending on the issues arising. CBT theorists suggest the way we think has an effect on our behaviour so if we change the way we think we can change our behaviour.

Along side my counselling I also work at a local children's hospice supporting the siblings of children with limited life expectancy. Within this role I build trust with the siblings so they can speak to me about their brother or sisters illness, I offer pre- bereavement and bereavement support within the role.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
