About me

Hi, I'm Ro Slater, welcome and well done for getting this far.

Please don't be scared!  We are post pandemic but lots of people are still anxious about lots of things.  Life is supposed to be 'back to normal' right?  Whatever that means.    Maybe you are struggling with anxiety and/or depression?  Or just feeling like life is too much?  Get in touch, let's see if talking things through with someone who won't judge you or tell you what to do can help.

I work from my home in Wembury, from a purpose built log cabin with plenty of space and ventilation.  I offer 30 minutes free - in person, over zoom or phone.  There's no obligation if you decide its not for you.   What have you got to lose?

Let's face it, people don't usually see a counsellor because they are feeling great.  Talking to someone can really help.  I work in a very gentle approachable way.  Give me a call, text or send an email and we can have a gentle chat to see if counselling is for you.

I have over 18 years experience working as a counsellor and supervisor.  I work with both adults and young people who are experiencing current or past difficulties which are preventing them getting on with their lives.

Its really important that you, the client, feels safe and welcome in a space where  you can talk freely about what's going on for you, without fear of being judged or criticised.  This can help you to make sense of what has happened in the past or is going on in your life now.

Finding a counsellor who 'fits' is a bit like buying a pair of shoes - you have to try before you decide.

If we are both happy to work together, we will then discuss how often you want to come along, and whether you think you want to focus on a particular issue, so counselling may be for a few sessions or whether its an ongoing situation and you want to leave it open ended.

I am happy to work with young people and teenagers, as long as this is supported by a parent or guardian.  I would work with the young person and their guardian in the first session to decide the best way to work together.

If you'd like to talk about counselling before making a decision please give me a call.

Training, qualifications & experience

Experience

I work in private practice part time as well as co-ordinating a community counselling service in Plymouth.  I have worked as a counsellor in a number of organisations including the NHS as a counsellor in GP practice offering short term therapy.  I've also been a counsellor for young people in  schools and youth projects.  I have extensive experience of working with young people, particularly teenagers.  More recently I have worked for a local authority as part of an education inclusion team, supporting young people who are struggling within the education system.

I also work as a supervisor for trainee and qualified counsellors, as well as providing private supervision to both GPs and social workers.  My private practice is run from a discreet log cabin next to my home in PL9.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Further information

I have lots of experience of counselling young people and teenagers and have worked extensively within the state education system for a number of years.  I understand the difficulties and pressures that young people experience at school, particularly during their GCSE and A level years.  This pressure can cause a lot of stress and anxiety for both young people and their families.
